what is the one health myth you wish the general public would just put to rest?
Fat is bad for your health. If meat comes from naturally raised, grass-fed or organic animals, keep the skin on! It will provide valuable fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, D and E but also amino acids, CLA and AA which have vital role in neurological development (11% of the brain is made up of AA), gut health and reducing prematurely ageing skin. Women are most vulnerable to eating a diet that is too low in fat.
what personal diet philosophy do you follow (supplements/plant based/ancestral etc ) ?
I think balance is the key and therefore don’t follow any diet that is too restrictive. However I will cook foods from scratch, using foods that are as close to nature as nature intended. This means my diet is naturally high in plant based foods and proteins. I do believe that if you start from a foundation of wellness, a little of what you fancy is part of that balance. I guess it can be summarized by the 80/20 approach. I only take Food-state supplements as this is the way in which the body is attuned to receiving nutrients – not as synthetically generated isolates as found in many supplements. I see outstanding results from using these natural low dose nutrients both in my own health and my clients.

what are the most common health problems you encounter ? and do you think a common thread connects them ?
My work specialises in women’s health and the most common symptoms I have with these clients are sub-fertility and menstrual irregularities such as PCOS, endometriosis, PMS and poor skin health. Most of these are accompanied by digestive imbalances and chronic stress.
what are simple healthful things people can start doing ASAP ?
- Getting more sleep. Sleeping between 10.45-6am has been shown to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and support your bodies adaption to external stress.
- Start the day with a protein based breakfast. This has been shown to reduce erratic eating and energy levels during the day. A good example would be poached eggs and spinach on rye bread or a quick protein smoothie of greek yoghurt, greens, frozen berries and chia seeds.
- Eat lightly in the evenings at least 3 times per week. Many of us tend to eat our main meal at night. This is a time when digestion can be more sluggish so eating lighter at this time, gives the digestive tract a needed rest.
- Start the day with hot water and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. This support liver and digestive wellbeing.

So firstly lets chat circadian rhythm .. no that is not cicada’s with exceptional dance skills .. but that would be amazing .. are cicadas just crickets ? what are they .. for some reason they make me think of swamps .

so whats up with our sleep at the moment ?
-stimulants are used regularly and without thought (yep that 3rd coffee by 2 pm is still f*cking your circadian rhythm come 10pm)
-lack of exercise (exercise has a direct affect on the hormones as well as energy cycles , as well as brain chemicals responsible for mood)
-lack of nutrients (magnesium is one of the most depleted nutrients in the modern diet and is in fact the greatest relaxant and most useful supplement to help with sleep disorders )

I love when a company does it right and I also love a Dairy Free Milk Alternative .. in fact I think I have tried every brand under the sun ..Ii dont think actually I know , I carry rice milk in my bag at all times .YES I AM THAT LAME!.

I recently came across Rude health ( a health food company noted for its cereals and granola) they’ve branched out into milk alternative drinks . and they are great . good for the earth,body and mind . most notably they are one of the only almond milk brands that doesn’t contain CARRAGEENAN an additive that has shown to be cancer causing (WTF ! I KNOW ) along with gastrointestinal issues .. its best just avoided (CLICK HERE FOR FULL INFO) .
As for the rice milk , its the only brand i’ve come across in the UK that uses Brown Rice, so you’re getting a wholegrain .. a WHOLE FOOD !! which is lower Gi (sugary basically) than white rice and more nutritious ! it also means it is broken down by the body easier . can I get a WHOOP WHOOP !

its an ENERGY THING , sugars are the easiest processed nutrient into energy .. therefore our bodies will look for it .. hence after work sweet TOOF!
Its An Emotional Thing.. because sugar produces more insulin which helps tryptophan go to the brain , thus increasing serotonin (the happy chemical)
Emotionally you have to deal with that.. i cant help … but spikes in your blood sugar levels by eating refined sugar will actually deplete your serotonin further .. so its a vicious cycle …. basically pinpoint the emotional reason and deal with it without food . hard but what am i supposed to say .. get a shrink basically
The problem is that the more refined the sugar e.g white sugar , high fructose corn syrup (and agave sorry foodies ) makes the bodies blood glucose spike.. so we get a surge of energy and then a quick fall .. we then continue to do this throughout the day .. so its long chained sugar intake thats required to stop this sugar monster , which is found in fruits and veg because fructose (fruit sugar) is accompanied by water, vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients, so it assimilates into the body slowly and with ease
so allow for unrefined sugars or naturally occurring sugars , like fruits and sweet vegetables like pumpkin , carrots, parsnips etc .. natural sweeteners like stevia , yacon and maple syrup , coconut sugar .
Dates are amazing because they taste fudgy and delicious and will satisfy that taste but still have the fiber needed to make them slow releasing
ALSO QUALITY MATTERS .. instead of shitty chocolate .. by ridiculously expensive RAW ORGANIC DARK CHOCOLATE .. because you will feel so guilty you spent so much on it .. you wont inhale it .. and it has health benefits

Spicy Curries , Pizza, Mexican food … basically all that dirty food , Or even just dousing everything in Tabasco Sauce.. i know someone who travels with it , and has been know to withdraw from pocket at the most amazing times ..
Too Much Cholesterol & Fat in the diet
similarly with bitter foods spicy foods aid digestion by cutting through that stagnation. spices like Cayenne and chillies also speed up metabolic rate , which if you have high cholesterol or a high saturated fat diet .. your metabolic rate tends to be sluggish (ey fatty!) as well as aiding in circulation , spices are actually amazing for people with bad circulation … but its the forms it comes in which aren’t .. indian spices are great , but become obsolete when you’re eating them in a curry that has more saturated fat that a tub of Haagen Dazs (thats for real .. like actually )
People can crave The Spice O’ Life if they have a low vitality diet as well.bland or repetitive .. spice literally is craved to liven up the energy of the body and its spoken about vastly in Ayurvedic Medicine ( so if you always crave it like my tabasco friend, its good to read up on )

1. You are not a tiger – don’t eat like one!

Take it easy on the steak and kidney pie and opt for veggie options when available. For meat lovers, this can be hard at first, so a good habit to start is meatless Mondays 😊 every week!
2. Alkaline first!
Before any meal, try to have some high-fiber alkaline foods like raw carrot sticks or a garden salad. This will ensure you’re getting your fiber needs, but more importantly, will help to balance your ph balance before you load up on saucy, starchy or meaty meals which are very acidic for our bodies.
3. Skip breakfast
Yes, that’s right!
Well, maybe that’s a bit extreme… But
eating breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper is a health myth… and its high time everyone stopped forcing breakfast into their mouths to “kick start their metabolism”
Our bodies didn’t evolve like that. Breakfast should be eaten when we first feel hungry in the day, not because cereal companies are telling you to chow down corn flakes at 7am.
You will have more energy if you actually delay your morning meal until you are feeling hungry – when the best thing to eat is fruit, a green smoothie or a fresh vegetable juice!

4-5 large handfuls of leafy greens – Kim recommends romaine lettuce, kale and spinach
Parsley or Coriander (if taste doesn’t bother you – very detoxifying)
1 liter of water (filtered is best!)
1 Apple (cored)
Juice ½ Lemon
1 cup Ice
Place ingredients in a big blender (the more powerful, the better and more appetizing your smoothies) – water and greens first, blitz, then add fruit and ice.
Blend until smooth.
Tip – use seasonal fruits – if apples aren’t available, substitute with peaches or whatever is lying around! Fresh is best.

How did you get involved in Make Up?
i was a social worker for the first 10 years of my career life and i worked in the realm of HIV/AIDS. I had a lot of clients who were transgendered, mostly male to female. The way they were able to transform themselves through the use of makeup was so amazing to me! it led me to start researching how i could be involved in that world – the world of makeup! i read up on every artist and photographer whose work i admired from all the major magazines, and found photographers to do test shoots with to begin building my book. It was a slow but sure process, and i made sure to remain open to learning everything and anything.
You favour natural products .. why and what are your favourites ?
As a person who’s concerned with what i put into my body with regard to food and drink, i find it just as important to be conscious with what i put on my body- and the bodies of my clients. There are so many good non-toxic lines on the market, with new ones popping up all the time. best advice you’ve ever been given ?
Not everybody has to like you. This is a tough one for me!
What are the new big trends in beauty/looks for 2013?
I never really follow trends… i’m more into timeless, classic beauty.
Beauty from the inside out seems quite important to you .. whats the best foods/supplements/ lifestyle choices for looking great?
Yes it is! The main issues that folks come to me with that make them feel less than great are skin breakouts, and skin dryness/lack of glow associated with aging.
Eating/drinking lots of fresh leafy greens, richly colored berries, and keeping greasy/heavy foods out of your diet is a great place to start. I’m also a proponent of including apple cider vinegar into your diet (1-2 tsp a day in water) plus 1-2 tsp of coconut oil mixed into your food – whether that’s in a smoothie, or your oatmeal, or cooking with it – will keep your liver clean, and your skin glowing, as well as help stave off any sickness. (i haven’t had a cold or the flu in YEARS!). I also believe in keeping a strong yoga practice to work out tension and find focus – it will show on your face, without a doubt.
I find that a hair/skin/nails supplement is generally beneficial to most, and choosing one made from whole foods is a good idea. The vitamin B and D groups are wonderful for keeping our emotional selves and cells in good health.
following on from that .. if I were to open your fridge .. what would you be most proud of or most embarrassed by ?
well, my boyfriend is a chef in a raw, vegan restaurant, so he’s in charge of the fridge – and there are countless containers of his great concoctions in there. I’d be most proud that at least 85 percent of food i keep in the house is organic and or locally grown/produced. We try to be mindful not to be wasteful and we only shop for what we know we’ll be eating within the few days that follow, so there’s never that much in there. Most embarrassed – I have an obsession with frozen sweet peas (organic, of course). i love them, so i keep tons of them on hand. when people open the freezer they’re always confused and surprised to find 15-20 bags of frozen peas on hand!
When it comes to getting ready for the red carpet what are your go-to fail safe products or techniques ?
i always start with getting the skin into glowing condition by giving a face oil massage before doing anything else.
Getting a good curl going on the lashes is very important to me, and I generally use a few false lashes to take a pretty lash to a gorgeous lash.
Can you recall any teenage make up disasters? ( I personally favoured a terracotta orange bronzer overload .. and an inability to blend down the neck hah!)
i have to say, i think i did a better job with my makeup when i was a teen! i was certainly more consistently put together – i wore perfectly executed black cat eyeliner every single day.

Inflammation of the body …
When the body acknowledges a substance that is foreign – take for example a splinter in your finger .. it causes the effected area to become inflamed – which is basically the immune system sending out infection fighters .
