Chris Kresser & Aspirin .. slightly personal

this post is weirdly personal … dun dun dunnnn

image

So firstly Chris Kresser is a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of integrative medicine. if you dont know him .. you basically don’t know anything about functional medicine and I’m about to blow your mind .

His website http://chriskresser.com is a vast vast wealth of knowledge about everything from Gluten intolerance to baby nutrition .. in face he wrote a book called The Healthy Baby Code .. so he know babies .

Screen Shot 2014-08-08 at 08.24.50

so before you get engulfed in a deep dive of his blog/website and free E-books .. which really shouldnt be free .. so we’re ripping him off something major .. so now we know he’s charitable .. do you love him as much as i do ??

Probably his most useful resource is his PODCAST .. where people can record questions for him to answer … ad boy does he answers .

SO THE PERSONAL ANGLE … my mum has a blood disorder so i thought on a whim and a prayer i would write in asking about her current aspirin prescription and illness.. and i woke up this morning with a new little podcast nestled like a sweet little egg in my hand (Hi Iphone glued to head whilst sleeping) – so unhealthy .

He answers the or paradigm that ASPIRIN IS FINE FOR LONG TERM USE …. so even thought the question was specific about my mums condition its also so useful for those trying to figure out the pro’s and cons of the little white pill .

NOTE* yes my voice is snoooozzeeefest and i canny pronounce people words sometimes

here’s the youtube version of the 30min conversation or go to the podcast on ITUNES

The Nightmare Of Not Sleeping

Lately in the health and wellness realms the idea of food as medicine is old hat. And now after thurough research a growing concern for the health habits of the current human population is being pointed to as the leading causes is everything from weight gain to chronic illness so basically it all starts with SLEEP.

SO what are the QUICK SAD FACTS:
-We sleep on an average 6.8 hours as opposed to 9 hours a century ago (shittt)
-Sleep is intricately connected to various hormonal and metabolic processes in the body and is important in maintaining metabolic homeostasis (mega shitt)
-Epidemiological data increasingly suggests that short sleep duration or chronic partial sleep deprivation may increase the risk of type II diabetes. (woopsie)
-Studies also revealed that chronic sleep deprivation (sleep less than 8 hours) was associated with increase in BMI. (that’s fat ladies)
-Loss of sleep or poor quality sleep over time has been associated with high blood pressure
-Long term studies on large number of shift workers suggested increase in breast and colon cancers

HOW DO YOU HACK YOUR SLEEP ?
REGULAR BEDTIME
Waking and sleeping at regular times reinforces a consistent sleep rhythm and reminds the brain when to release those all-important sleep and wake hormones… yep this is called you circadian rhythm my dears .

BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION

Screen Shot 2014-07-30 at 09.59.32
The second most common cause of insomnia is blood sugar issues …90% of people are unaware of this problem until the detrimental effects begin to show . because we simply cant connect that the jumping your insulin levels all over the shop during the day seriously effects your hormones (INSULIN IS A HORMONE MY FRIENDS!!!)
This is happening if You’re eat every 2-3 hours all day (snacking and grazing have been debunked as that 90’s myth of increasing metabolism .. instead its 3 meals a day which regulate sugar levels in turn making your metabolism most efficient . ” this constant eating results your body expecting to get fed every 2-3 hours, right, sooo good luck going to bed at the end of the day and expecting to sleep through the night, youre going to wake up when your blood sugar drops enough for you body to release adrenaline and wake you up (probs HANGRY as F*ck)
TIPS TO COUNTERACT  THIS:
1. eat 3-4 square meals a day with no snacking .. like a human
2.Eat whole foods – avoid processed foods.
- your body understands these and utilizes them properly .. Gummy worms and Diet Coke … are basically completely alien to your insides
3. Eat Protein in the morning and carbs at night .. counter intuitive to what we previously thought .. but carbs in the evening of the SAFE KIND like root vegetables actually aid in the release of serotonin which switches on the signals to sleep (serotonin is the “happy” chemical yes, which also explains why depressed people also suffer from insomnia)
*NOTE a sweet potato , yam or white potato are the perfect carbs to keep blood sugar levels smooth sailing through the whole slumber session (a great book detailing this is Potato’s Not Prozac , a worthy read for any food addict or diabetic )

BLACK-OUT

Screen Shot 2014-04-16 at 14.06.50
Research has demonstrated that nighttime light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin, the major hormone secreted by the pineal gland that controls sleep and wake cycles, so keep your room dark as possible , funnily enough a study also showed that even if a source of light was pointed at a sleeping persons foot (not in eyesight) the body start to cycle into the waking faze … WOW ! Nowadays we have so much light emitting form tech things like phones and computers , its worth downloading the FREE program – f.lux which switches you laptop screen to AMBER lights , enabling optimal circadian rhythm .. And is also less geeky then wearing amber glasses ..

SUPPLEMENTS THAT HELP:

L-THEANINE

L-Theanine is a non-protein amino acid found naturally in green tea (Camellia sinensis). It is clinically proven to reduce stress, balance mood and improve the quality of sleep. It’s mechanism of action is through direct effect on GABA receptors. Recommended dose approximately 100mg before bed. – See more at: http://drhedberg.com/2012/02/06/how-to-cure-insomnia/#sthash.90M7DyMC.dpuf

PHOSPHATIDYL SERINE

brain’s relationship with the adrenal glands. After only ten days of high doses of PS, research has shown that excessive cortisol levels can be decreased in healthy men. PS has also been shown to enhance brain function and memory, decrease anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance metabolism. It is also an antioxidant. It is very difficult for the body to make PS as it requires many nutrients for production. Supplementation is vital for optimizing adrenal function so cortisol cannot have its negative effects on the body and the thyroid.

MAGNESIUM
Magnesium aids in calming the nerves and relaxing the muscles, which in turn can help individuals to fall asleep. Similarly, a deficiency of the mineral is sometimes responsible for the nervousness that prevents sleep. Magnesium deficiency hampers the ability of the body’s motor nerves, which carry electrical impulses from the brain to the muscles to send the correct messages

Screen Shot 2014-07-30 at 10.03.00

MELATONIN
melatonin, in low doses for short periods – no more than a week or two at a time – can help regulate sleep rhythms. Generally, 1/2mg -2 mg about an hour and a half before bed will do the trick. Keep in mind however, for some people, over-use of melatonin can actually disrupt sleep, so use it sparingly and follow the manufacturer’s dosing instructions.

TEA TIME:
herbs like lemon balm, passion flower, chamomile, magnolia and valerian root ALL aid in relaxation and have proven to be as effective as some prescriptive sleeping medications

Interesting facts
1. if you feel a “tired but wired” sensation at night it means that the your cortisol (stress hormone) cycle is out of whack .. it should be high in the morning .. to get us out of bed .. and slowly lower till the evening to allow for melotonin to build inducing sleep

2. if your excuse for lack of sleep is needing to pee … its not ok .. waking up to pee is actually rather abnormal because our body produces hormones that stop us need to relive our selves at night

3.Better-reported sleep quality (longer duration and better quality sleep) was associated with greater fat loss during a calorie-restriction diet program in adults.

Henrietta Norton: A Nutritional Therapist Dishes On Diet , Why Fat Is Fab and Wild Nutrition

Screen Shot 2014-05-21 at 18.14.48

Henrietta Norton Is a UK based  Nutritional therapist ,HUFFINGTON POST contributor , member of Guild of Health Writers, published author , Health Speaker , mother AND co-founder of the whole food nutritional supplement company Wild Nutrition … AND TAKE A BREATH! I don’t think I’ve ever used that many comma’s to describe one person…oh I forgot she was also named as ES magazine’s ‘ top 10 health gurus to have on speed dial’

So basically whatever she’s taking we want right ?

She’s not only been helping out clients deal with health issues , mainly in the realm of woman’s health and fertility (she wrote a book on Endometriosis) she’s now embarked on a new endeavour to provide whole-food derived supplements that are free of fillers, bulking agents or synthetic ingredients.. out of neccessity to provide her own clients with supplements that were actually functional and healthful unlike so many commercially produced products on the market … being one of the only brands available that refuses to use plastics! she’s so far ahead of the game.. we had to pick her brain .

*note : she is currently pregnant .. is this woman a superhero ?!??! what the what!?!?

what is the one health myth you wish the general public would just put to rest?

Fat is bad for your health. If meat  comes from naturally raised, grass-fed or organic animals, keep the skin on! It will provide valuable fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, D and E but also amino acids, CLA and AA which have vital role in neurological development (11% of the brain is made up of AA), gut health and reducing prematurely ageing skin. Women are most vulnerable to eating a diet that is too low in fat.

Screen Shot 2014-05-21 at 23.42.16

what personal diet philosophy do you follow (supplements/plant based/ancestral etc )  ?

I think balance is the key and therefore don’t follow any diet that is too restrictive. However I will cook foods from scratch, using foods that are as close to nature as nature intended. This means my diet is naturally high in plant based foods and proteins.  I do believe that if you start from a foundation of wellness, a little of what you fancy is part of that balance. I guess it can be summarized by the 80/20 approach. I only take Food-state supplements as this is the way in which the body is attuned to receiving nutrients – not as synthetically generated isolates as found in many supplements. I see outstanding results from using these natural low dose nutrients both in my own health and my clients.

BBBB

ABOVE: WILD NUTRITION’S SUPPLEMENTS

what are the most common health problems you encounter ? and do you think a common thread connects them ?

My work specialises in women’s health and the most common symptoms I have with these clients are sub-fertility and menstrual irregularities such as PCOS, endometriosis, PMS and poor skin health. Most of these are accompanied by digestive imbalances and chronic stress.

Screen Shot 2014-05-22 at 00.15.51

what are simple healthful things people can start doing ASAP ?

  • Getting more sleep. Sleeping between 10.45-6am has been shown to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and support your bodies adaption to external stress.
  • Start the day with a protein based breakfast. This has been shown to reduce erratic eating and energy levels during the day. A good example would be poached eggs and spinach on rye bread  or a quick protein smoothie of greek yoghurt, greens, frozen berries and chia seeds.
  • Eat lightly in the evenings at least 3 times per week. Many of us tend to eat our main meal at night. This is a time when digestion can be more sluggish so eating lighter at this time, gives the digestive tract a needed rest.
  • Start the day with hot water and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. This support liver and digestive wellbeing.

but heres a nice image i made

so its a pretty serious thing , it has a direct affect of our hormones and mood . from every body of work i have looked at to every health guru, doctor and researcher will site sleep as the NUMBER ONE attribute of life that has the greatest effect on OVERALL HEALTH !

so whats up with our sleep at the moment ?

-stimulants are used regularly and without thought (yep that 3rd coffee by 2 pm is still f*cking your circadian rhythm come 10pm)
-lack of exercise (exercise has a direct affect on the hormones as well as energy cycles , as well as brain chemicals responsible for mood)
-lack of nutrients (magnesium is one of the most depleted nutrients in the modern diet and is in fact the greatest relaxant and most useful supplement to help with sleep disorders )

– indoor lifestyles , as the cicadian is immediately responsive to sunning the lack of which and the more artificial lights as well as not exposing yourself to sunlight upon waking (apparently every time you wake up you should run to a window/outside and open your eyes to the brightest outdoor light , this is the ultimate reset energy boost!)
– LAPTOPS AND SCREENS (yep that blue glow from the phone/computer/tv/laptop/ipad is directly f*cking up your rhythm)

SO i can’t help knock that coffee out of your hand, kick you out into the sunshine every morning , shove your face full of magnesium dense food and get you climbing a tree …

I CAN HELP YOU WITH THE LAST ONE !

MARILYN MONROE on her “bizarre” Diet And Exercise Habits..

An absoloutley fascinating interview with Monroe in which she divulged candidly her diet and exercise habits .. and her penchant for bizarre tastes as well as revealing she sometimes sleeps 10 HOURS!! wtf babe was like a big fluffy pussycat

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 20.00.22

“EXERCISE. Each morning, after I brush my teeth, wash my face and shake off the first deep layer of sleep, I lie down on the floor beside my bed and begin my first exercise. It is a simple bust-firming routine which consists of lifting five-pound weights from a spread-eagle arm position to a point directly above my head. I do this 15 times, slowly. I repeat the exercise another 15 times from a position with my arms above my head. Then, with my arms at a 45-degree angle from the floor, I move my weights in circles until I’m tired. I don’t count rhythmically like the exercise people on the radio; I couldn’t stand exercise if I had to feel regimented about it.”

 1344283359_8707_mm
“Frankly, I’ve never considered my own figure so exceptional; until quite recently, I seldom gave it any thought at all. My biggest single concern used to be getting enough to eat. Now I have to worry about eating too much. I never used to bother with exercises. Now I spend at least 10 minutes each morning working out with small weights. I have evolved my own exercises, for the muscles I wish to keep firm, and I know they are right for me because I can feel them putting the proper muscles into play as I exercise.”
article-2184053-14571A6C000005DC-651_306x512
“SPORTS. I have never cared especially for outdoor sports, and have no desire to excel at tennis, swimming or golf. I’ll leave those things to the men. Despite its great vogue in California, I don’t think sun-tanned skin is any more attractive than white skin, or any healthier, for that matter. I’m personally opposed to a deep tan because I like to feel blond all over.
largeBy nature, I suppose I have a languorous disposition. I hate to do things in a hurried, tense atmosphere, and it is virtually impossible for me to spring out of bed in the morning. On Sunday, which is my one day of total leisure, Isometimes take two hours to wake up, luxuriating in every last moment of drowsiness. Depending on my activities, I sleep between five and ten hours every night. I sleep in an extra-wide single bed, and I use only one heavy down comforter over me, summer or winter. I have never been able to wear pajamas or creepy nightgowns; they disturb my sleep.”
 Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 19.51.22
“BREAKFAST. I’ve been told that my eating habits are absolutely bizarre, but I don’t think so. Before I take my morning shower, I start warming a cup of milk on the hot plate I keep in my hotel room. When it’s hot, I break two raw eggs into the milk, whip them up with a fork, and drink them while I’m dressing. I supplement this with a multi-vitamin pill, and I doubt if any doctor could recommend a more nourishing breakfast for a working girl in a hurry.
article-2184053-14571BA4000005DC-114_634x392
DINNER. My dinners at home are startlingly simple. Every night I stop at the market near my hotel and pick up a steak, lamb chops or some liver, which I broil in the electric oven in my room. I usually eat four or five raw carrots with my meat, and that is all. I must be part rabbit; I never get bored with raw carrots.
Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 11.05.49
P.S. It’s a good thing, I suppose, that I eat simply during the day, for in recent months I have developed the habit of stopping off at Wil Wright’s ice cream parlor for a hot fudge sundae on my way home from my evening drama classes. I’m sure that I couldn’t allow myself this indulgence were it not that my normal diet is composed almost totally of protein foods.”

BONE BROTH :

RUNNNNN VEGANS RUNNN!!

Image

No but seriously the old adage , chicken soup for every ailment has actually proven itself to be not just a fun fact … but straight up FACT . Its slow simmered animal bones (how do you make that sound normal?) along with all the gelatinous and collegen filled marrow/connective tissue and joints (again sounds gross. Reason to broth :

– used on the GAPS diet to heal leaky cut /intestinal issues and consistant indigestion.

-Cures upper respitory infections as proven here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11035691

-Makes your hair and skin beautiful due to the high content of gelatin and collegen (yep that sh*t people inject in their faces you can in fact ingest and build-your-own-botox)

-More minerals than a multivitamin , and more readily absorbed . in chinese medicine they have a saying that “like cures Like” so drink both broth .. build healthy bones !

-Filled with amino acids glycine and proline – both potent inflammation fighters .. hence why it helps with stomach problems and particularly for people who are celiac and exposed to gluten .. soothing mmmm

Still cant bring yourself to do it .. read sarah wilsn article n why you should http://www.sarahwilson.com.au/2012/01/how-to-make-bone-broth-and-why-you-should/

BUTTER:

Screen Shot 2014-02-01 at 07.24.53

Yep  said it butter . BUTTER IS BETTER .

OUR GRANDPARENTS KNEW IT !! they remained sceptactle of margarine from the beginning … they new that you cant make something that looks like butter out of cotton and soy.. without  a WIZARD…or some kind of horrific chemical process .a lot of research has been done into the saturated fat issue .. and finally people have realized vegetable franken-oils are very likely the worst thing to happen to the human body since white bread (yeh don’t butter that sh*it please)

By no means is this a free pass to butter EVERYTHING . but if you must . avoid margarine at all costS and paste on some ORGANIC fresh buttery goodness.

FERMENTED FOODS:

I have a feeling  I don’t even need to detail this one anymore , last year fermenty goodness was all the rage . Whether Kombucha, sauerkraut, Kvaas, miso, tempeh or kefir was your crack . Anyone into  the healthy living thing (basically everyone) was consuming fermented foods like a fat kid at  a pick n’ mix.

Full of probiotics and digestive enzymes .. these babies are going to save you on the supplement isle .. and the generations that came before us consumed them  ALL the time! Which explains why old people homes smell like farts (sauerkraut you delicious beast you)

Omega 3’s

Omega-3-sources

Indisputable new studies have proven omega 3 deficiencies are the cause of many and most mental and physical ailments .. from depression to weight gain , with modern diets so high in omega 6’s in the form of vegetable oils in basically all processed foods .. Omega 3 are depleted and considering our body cant produce them and needs to aqquire them from foods (unless you’re eating a lot of sustainable fish and flaxseed) you wont be getting adequate amounts .. everyones going to be talking about krill oil & fish oils supplements as the most successful ways of building your Essential Fatty Acids .. its all about OMEGA 3 in 2014

Paleo Diets

PaleoDiet2
They were big this year , but in 2014 paleo is going to reign supreme . The Palaeolithic diet harps back to eating caveman style and shunning Dairy and ALL GRAINS AND LEGUMES in favour of fat rich grass fed meats and fresh produce . Last year was all about bacon and eggs for breakfast , but this years paleo diet will look far more fresh , healthy and Gatherer -Hunter as opposed to Hunter-Gatherer . Think kale salads , fresh fish and simple berry dishes . Adriana lima is doing it … nuff said

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) CrossFit and Functional exercise (like pulling objects , climbing and gymnastic based gym workouts) are where its at .
losing that stubborn weight or toning up quick is about short intense 20 minute workout utilizing multiple muscle groups to turn up the dial on metabolism and start the fat burning process .

From Australia to Europe and other progressive areas of the world have shunned it in public places , put taxes on it and upped the ante on advertising its negative impacts on your health … but it doesn’t even need to be said anymore , almost all smokers are wanting to quit and with books so popular like Allen Carr’s Quit Smoking The Easy Way and various new forms of meditation and hypnosis to toss the habit  alongside a rapid rise in sales of Electronic Cigarettes .. smoking will be a thing of the past sooner than we thought … even the french are over it

“I do Ballet Beautiful. It’s a lot of fun learning the movements and getting better at them. Playing with grace and elegance is not something I did growing up and it’s so fun to have the opportunity now. It keeps my spirit youthful and the perfect way to improve posture,” she told us. “It also inspires me to move my body in different ways.”

Doutzen Kroes

“When I am in NYC I always go for a run outside, along the Hudson River, and I really love that. But I also do lots of boxing and jump rope training,” she told us. “I love to really sweat and have a tough workout and so my best workouts are mostly cardio. They do good but they make you feel good at the same time.”

Candice Swanepoel

“I’m fit all year round, but about three weeks before the show I do step it up a bit. I have to eat a lot more, so I can work out a lot more,” she told us. “I like to feel really strong: to have a good bum and strong legs on the catwalk, so I really focus on that.”

Lindsay Ellingson

“I eat normally, but I’ve been exercising a lot more. I work with Ballet Beautiful and Mary Helen is amazing. You can ask her to focus on certain muscles of your body that you want toned and she’ll do that,” she said. “When you work in lingerie, you really want your glutes really tight and your core, so I’ve been focusing on those areas.”

Alessandra Ambrosio

Ambrosio undertakes pilates and yoga three times a week, and intense 10-day sessions of the Brazil Butt Lift class, devised by her trainer. “It isn’t hard to stay in shape,” she told Vogue‘s Sarah Harris. “I think I’m in better shape now than I was 10 years ago, but it takes a bigger toll – I get back pain!”

Behati Prinsloo

“I try to do Pilates when I can all year around and I also like to swim a lot. I also have a trainer that kicks my butt when it’s needed! I like to be active and keep busy,” she told us.

Toni Garrn

“My exercise regime is pretty strict anyway. I work out every day, but I step it up for the show,” she told us. “Before the 2013 show, I didn’t eat sugar or gluten for a month – which is extreme for me because I’m a big, big sweet tooth – so that was the biggest challenge of my life basically!”

INSTANT SHIITAKE:

Top 2 Benefits of Shiitake
1. Nurture skin and beauty
2. Support liver

Shiitake mushroom
Shiitake mushroom, the active ingredient in Instant Shiitake, is a true beauty food. For thousands of years in Asia, shiitake has been used to heal the skin, support the liver, enliven the blood, and boost Qi (meaning ‘life force’). It is a great natural booster for detoxing. Schisandra berry has always been the number one beauty herb in Asia and dandelion further detoxifies the body to support clean and glowing skin. Natural vitamin C from rose hip multiplies the bioavailability of all the active components.

INSTANT MAITAKE ( one of my favourites , but i can never get it as apparently its everyone’s favourite)

Top 2 Benefits of Maitake
1. Support weight-loss
2. Balance blood sugar levels

Maitake mushroom
Maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa), the active ingredient of Instant Maitake, can be of great help for diabetics and in supporting weight loss. It is especially known for its capabilities to modulate blood sugar levels and to optimize the insulin production. Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is a sacred herb in Ayurveda and supports these effects. Ginger helps with bloating and natural vitamin C from rose hip increases the assimilation of all the goodies.

INSTANT LION’S MANE (ive not personally tried this , but my brain probably needs too)

Top 2 Benefits of Lion’s Mane
1. Increase memory and concentration
2. Protect the nervous system

Lion’s Mane mushroom
Lion’s Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus), the active ingredient of Instant Lion’s Mane, is the best friend for anyone who wants to maintain a healthy brain and a strong nervous system throughout life. INSTANT CHAGA

Top 2 Benefits of Chaga
1. Boost the immune system
2. Fight against pathogens

Chaga mushroom
Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus), the active ingredient of Instant Chaga, is a vital part of a “pathogen-proof” immune system. Chaga contains one of the nature’s highest amount of SOD (superoxide dismutase), the most potent antioxidant in the human body. The antioxidant count in the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale also goes through the roof. The antioxidants prevent oxidations from happening in the body and thus protects the DNA and keeps the body young. Studies have shown that chaga use is an effective way to fight against unwanted bacteria, viruses, and inflammation. Chaga has also been shown to have very strong anti-tumor properties.

INSTANT REISHI (the one that got me hooked Planet Organic Cafe does an AMAZING reishi rice milk Cappuccino .. its a must )

Top 2 Benefits of Reishi
1. Reduce stress
2. Improve sleep quality

Reishi mushroom
Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum), the active ingredient of Instant Reishi, is nature’s ultimate anti-stress antidote. As an intelligent mushroom, reishi may balance an overdriven hormone system and improve sleep quality. As an adaptogen reishi may help the body fight against stress caused by demanding modern society. Reishi has a history of use of over 4000 years, and it’s one of the most researched natural medicines in the world.

INSTANT CORDYCEPS (all round good one)

Top 2 Benefits of Cordyceps
1. Boost energy levels
2. Improve sexual performance – OH HELLO !!

Cordyceps mushroom
Cordyceps mushroom (Ophiocordyceps sinensis), the active ingredient of Instant Cordyceps, has some exciting properties for anyone who desires to improve his/her performance. Many scientific studies have shown that cordyceps can increase one’s maximal oxygen intake (VO2 max) by up to 15%. Oxygen is the most important element for your body. The MindValley Gives Us One Of The Most Important Info-graphics Ever & A Video Exercise That May Change Your Life

I WAS RECENTLY DISCUSSING THIS WITH SOMEONE:

THAT ALTHOUGH SCHOOL BEING GREAT….. REALLY LACKS IN SOME LIFE LESSONS, like no one told me how integral stress management , and happiness can be in terms of sticking with  a career path . or that in life both professional and personal you’re dealing with other peoples emotions . and EGO’s  .. AND I WONDERED WHY THERE WASNT A SCHOOL OF LIFE or a course or even anyone else who had thought about this major limitation in the education system  , and alas as The Rule Of Attraction  will have it I stumbled upon MindValley …

they use cartoons which makes life so easy (i probably should have listened more at school and maybe cartoons wouldn’t appeal so much )

Yogi Rachel Brathen Talks Body Image, Seinfeld , Pigeon Pose And A Pup Called Ringo

rachel
In an era of excessive stimulation and constant viral over exposure (may the twerk RIP ) its nice to come across someone using Social Media for good …
Thats where Rachel Brathen comes in, a travelling yogi with more than  59,000 followers on Facebook and a casual 409k on Instagram … yep she’s basically the Beyonce of yoga .
Her profiles are peppered with beautiful images of her Aruba abode  (yep she lives on a caribbean island FML ) her always-booked-out retreats , a slightly mental whippet named Ringo (he has an Instagram @ringo_thegringo ) as well as jaw dropping pictures of intricate poses mid-ocean .. on a PADDLE BOARD! – This my friends is called SUP yoga (Stand-Up Paddle board Yoga) and Rachel was one of the first people to pioneer the beautiful practice.
It may sound as though she’s living the good life , but Rachel takes her social media power seriously  and with great responsibility .. especially with helping her younger female fans accept their bodies .
We picked her yogi brain .. and she lovingly provided us with this :
slide12

DFH:  how did you start out as a yoga instructor?

RB: I was practicing a lot and found myself one day thinking “if i was teaching this class, i’d do this or that different…” and shortly after that i started teaching to friends and the company i worked for while living in costa rica. i was teaching for a year before i did my first teacher training. when i moved to aruba i started teaching full time – there was no real yoga community on the island and i had a big space to fill! now the yoga community is thriving; it’s beautiful.

DFH:The single healthy tip EVERYONE should incorporate into their hectic lives?

RB:Breathe deeply, drink more water and don’t make life as seriously as your mind wants it to be.

DFH:What makes you laugh ?

RB:My puppies! All the time. Also, Seinfeld. Favorite show. Ever.
 Image

DFH:you have an amazing following, especially on social media sites like Instagram , whats your favourite image you have posted and why  ?

RB:I posted a “love your body love your soul” post a few months ago, describing some of my flaws (stretch makes, i like eating cheese in bed, i have oily skin) and  a couple weeks back a picture of my belly fat. Haha – yes – these is my favorite posts! i get such amazing response every time. I’m sick of seeing only picture perfect posts on instagram, like everyone’s lives are so damn perfect all the time. we choose what we portray. everyone has bad days, everyone feels inadequate from time to time.. and it can be quite intimidating seeing post after post of advanced yoga poses, fitness shots, beach… no one’s life looks like that all the time. i do my best to inspire people and still keep it real. the comments i get on these posts make me tear up, and i get flooded with emails. so much love from people who are just want to accept their bodies as they are.
 image

DFH:how do you stay healthy whilst travelling ?

i don’t always. i try to practice as much as i can – i always have my mat with me. i focus on drinking water. i do gentle stretches every morning and legs up the wall every evening to keep my body happy. i drink beer when i feel like it and never ever ever indulge in “guilty pleasures” – NO GUILT. EVER. Pleasure? Hell yes!

DFH: how would you advise people especially young girls to accept their bodies?

RB:We have to change the way we see ourselves, not the way we eat. Instead of trying to change your body (lose weight, get fitter, slimmer whatever), focus on loving your body first – real change and healthy ways come from there. Stop feeling guilty about what you eat or how you act! I read a fitness magazine the other day and they had a segment called “you ate it? negate it?” – BULLSHIT! It’s stuff like that that promotes insane body images. like, “uh-oh, i accidentally indulged and enjoyed dessert after dinner, or birthday cake, or wine with my friends… How do i get rid of the guilt i feel – how much exercise do i need to do?”. It’s nuts. There are so many more important things in life than obsessing over calories or number on a scale. What do you love to do? What makes you feel good? What makes you really happy? Focus on this! Be happy, first. Don’t take your body so seriously. Life is much more fun when we relax and love ourselves the way we are.

DFH:Favourite Pose?

RB:Double pigeon pose. Or legs up the wall pose. And handstands!
pigpose

DFH:advice for people wanting to become yoga instructors?

RB:Find your own voice. Don’t try to copy your past teachers, or an image of what you want to be as a teacher. Find what makes you unique and use that as a teacher.

DFH:a list of  favourites…

RB:
Website: www.youtube.com. i love cute animal videos!
Film: the darjeeling limited. or jeff who lives at home. or garden state. or sleepless in seattle! i’m a sucker for sappy love stories.
Book: The power of NOW by eckhart toll. and the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafon.
person: all of my sister and brothers (i have five). can’t pick! they’re all much younger than me and i love them to death.
instagram: @ringo_thegringoImage
Mantra: thank you
supplement: none.
beauty product: argan oil!
meal: breakfast 🙂

DFH:finally whats in store in the next 6months ?

oh. so much! we have three more retreats this year, all sold out. i love our retreat groups. i just started working with a media production company so some exciting things in the works!  early next year we go to mexico, then a europe tour, then brazil… oh and at some point i’m getting married!! crazy! it’s going to be a good year 🙂

Your Quick Guide To Ayurveda + Whats Yo’ Dosha Type + Get Healthy

for some reason this post made my head sing that craig david song .. Whats your flavour ohh tell me whats your flavour .

Any way ..

WHAT IS AYURVEDA MEDICINE ?

Screen Shot 2013-04-12 at 10.25.23

Ayurveda is around 5000-6000 years old and is a form of natural healing and prevention developed after thousands of years of monitoring the human body  by the Indian monks. it means Ayur (life) Veda(science) AKA The Science Of Life .It focuses on BALANCE within the body and the theory that our Mind-Body-Spirits are composed of 3 DOSHA’s

Vata (wind)

Pitta (fire)

Kapha (earth)

With One more dominant overall Dosha .

Screen Shot 2013-04-12 at 06.07.43

I for example am predominantly VATA , which is the cold slightly pathetic one… prone to brain frizzes . and apparently i need a lot of massages … i have unintentionally been living by this rule my whole like (body intuition? )

a quick questionnaire will tell you yours.

click below

WHATS YOUR DOSHA?

WHY ITS WORTH IT ?

  • its a beautiful approach to health because it focuses on being individual .. no one health rule works for everyone.. its a personal balance and we all function differently
  • Instead of prescriptions and drugs , Ayurveda uses Food and Lifestyle as the most important medicine
  • Prevention is the greatest cure

What Happens Without The Balance

General Health Tips for Kapha Types:

It’s important to be active on a daily basis as Kapha types are prone to sluggishness, depression, and being overweight. Getting out of the house and actively seeking new experiences is also recommended. Be receptive to useful change, be intentional in implementing life-enhancing actions. Choose foods that are light, warm, and spicy. Tea with dried ginger and lemon is a great pick-me-up for Kaphas. Avoid heavy oily and processed sugars, which are detrimental to Kaphas. Use lots of spices such as black pepper, ginger, cumin, chili and lots of bitter dark greens.

The China Study Author Nails A New Book

Well&GoodNYC what would i do without your little daily inbox’s of goodness !

this morning I got an email about Dr. T. Colin Campbell‘s new book .. he’s the Author of every health conscious persons Bible .. THE CHINA STUDY .. “It’s the largest comprehensive study of human nutrition ever conducted. It was launched via a partnership between Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine. The groundbreaking results from the study (and other influential nutrition research) recommend the best diet for long-term health.”

Image

And now Whole: Rethinking The Science Of Nutrition <——-thats a link

Image

Well&good gave the lowdown on what the book covers:

*Source:http://www.wellandgoodnyc.com/2013/10/10/does-the-science-of-nutrition-need-a-makeover/

1. Food is more important than nutrients. “The whole apple is far more than the sum of its parts,” Dr. Campbell says. Looking at a food as just a list of calories, protein, calcium, and Vitamin C, etc., is not enough. Taking a supplement for each nutrient in an apple, for example, is not the same as eating one (see numbers 2-4).

2. Nutrients in food vary immensely. So, if you want to eat exactly 1,000 mg of calcium each day, good luck. One handful of beans does not contain the same amount as another, even if nutrition facts claim it does. Beta-carotene in some foods can vary three- to nineteen-fold, and one study found it varied forty-fold in peaches.

3. Nutrients affect each other, big time. Magnesium influences the effects of iron, protein affects zinc, vitamin A acts differently when paired with vitamin D, and so on. So focusing on getting each nutrient is infinitely more complicated than taking a supplement for each one.

4. What your body does with the nutrients is key. “The food we put in our mouths doesn’t control our nutrition—not entirely,” he says. “What our bodies do with that food does.” So if you ingest 500 mg of vitamin C, that doesn’t mean your body is going to utilize all of it.

5. Your body knows what it’s doing! Dr. Campbell argues that while the complexities of nutrient interactions sound complicated and discouraging, the body is actually doing a great job at making what you eat work for you. In the end, he says, you can eat a whole foods, plant-based diet that’s heavy on veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, and legumes and short on processed foods, animal products, added salt, oil, and sugar, with balanced carbs, protein, and fat, and the rest will take care of itself. “In short, your body is constantly monitoring and adjusting the concentrations of nutrients in the food you consume in order to turn massive variability into the narrower ranges it requires to be healthy.” —Lisa Elaine Held

Below Is a Little excerpt which i think is pivotal that every human know (i’m being so serious today !?!? OHMAGAWWDD)

.. his books are always innovative, and incredible so get reading peeps

Drop The Idea Of Protein Being A Meat Thing

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 08.45.35

This is possibly the most annoying thing I ever hear.. “but if i don’t eat meat/ animal productsIi wont have enough protein!!’

“All vegetables have protein. In fact, calorie for calorie, spinach is more protein rich than beef. While 100 calories of ground beef has 10 grams of protein, 100 calories of fresh baby spinach has 12 grams.”

the above quote comes from an article on Natural News about how to Beat Inflammation  CLICK IT HERE

It details why its important to lessen your meat consumption-along with refined sugars and carbs due to there acidity . AND IS JUST A GREAT READ !

Although I don’t eat meat I am so aware that people do need it because of their constitution and I completely believe in the organic farming industry . However I do have a slight issue (does anyone care about my issues?!?) with the regularity in which people consume animal products . BASICALLY IF YOURE EATING SOME KIND OF ANIMAL PRODUCT AT EVERY MEAL , YOU NEED TO REASSESS YOUR DIET! for the sake of your insides, your heart, PH level , energy levels and all round health

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 08.49.23

So get strong with veggies like PopEYE .. I always wondered .. like was he lifting too much and popped his eye?!? was he born with a popped eye IS THAT A THING? , did his parents cruelly give him that name because of a birth defect ?!? what is going on !?!?

Below is the book I’ve been Reading which has the quiz in it .. and i’ve .. to the bewilderment of all my friends been subjecting them and grouping them into their Dosha Types .. and have actually become super quick at picking peoples before they do the test… so fortune teller I know.. the amazing thing has been how spot on they are .. right down to their food preferences and even what exercise of work environment they thrive in.

These are the 3 Dosha’s .. which Ayurvedic medicine believes we are all comprised of however individually havegreater constitution of 1 primary type.. sometimes 2 (lucky!) .. and an imbalance in our bodies of the 3 doshas is the basis for all mental and physical problems , including disease and weight problems as well as depression

Im a typical Vata .. and recently have decided to follow the rules of my dosha type .. i must say it makes sense .. however I’m a vegan , sooooo its kinda hard when your Dosha type thrives of dairy and warm food .. so i’ve had to find alternatives , but whatever . it explains my former obsession for eating tubs of yogurt in the bath… now that i think about it .. that was depressingly Bridget Jone’s of me .. especially as it usually happened saturday nights , with Will & Grace playing on my laptop.. sometimes I do a mental mantra reminding myself i’m only 22 years old ..

But one amazing supplement the research i’ve been doing has turned me onto is ASHWAGANDHA .. yes is ass rapingly difficult to pronounce

basically

“Ashwagandha, an exotic Indian herb, has remarkable stress-relieving properties comparable to those of powerful drugs used to treat depression and anxiety. In addition to its excellent protective effects on the nervous system, ashwagandha may be a promising alternative treatment for a variety of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Ashwagandha has powerful antioxidant properties that seek and destroy the free radicals that have been implicated in aging and numerous disease states. Even more remarkable, emerging evidence suggests that ashwagandha has anti-cancer benefits as well.” Source

although its meant for VATA types (feeling a bit like this post sounds like im speaking a foreign language or have become a member of captain planet “earth,wind,fire.. what sign are you!”  ughh)

but Ashwaganda its shown to have amazing properties in the body .. no matter who you are . its worth a try .. especially if you have a high stress situation going on and has also shown to

  • normalizes levels of hydrocortisone,
  • causes the size of the adrenal glands to return to normal,
  • increases thyroid hormone levels,
  • decreases inflammatory cytokines,
  • decreases oxidizing agents that can trigger inflammation,
  • decreases brain chemicals associated with anxiety,
  • markedly improves stamina and energy, and
  • turns on and improves white blood cell function to fight infections.
