Lately in the health and wellness realms the idea of food as medicine is old hat. And now after thurough research a growing concern for the health habits of the current human population is being pointed to as the leading causes is everything from weight gain to chronic illness so basically it all starts with SLEEP.
SO what are the QUICK SAD FACTS:
-We sleep on an average 6.8 hours as opposed to 9 hours a century ago (shittt)
-Sleep is intricately connected to various hormonal and metabolic processes in the body and is important in maintaining metabolic homeostasis (mega shitt)
-Epidemiological data increasingly suggests that short sleep duration or chronic partial sleep deprivation may increase the risk of type II diabetes. (woopsie)
-Studies also revealed that chronic sleep deprivation (sleep less than 8 hours) was associated with increase in BMI. (that’s fat ladies)
-Loss of sleep or poor quality sleep over time has been associated with high blood pressure
-Long term studies on large number of shift workers suggested increase in breast and colon cancers
HOW DO YOU HACK YOUR SLEEP ?
Waking and sleeping at regular times reinforces a consistent sleep rhythm and reminds the brain when to release those all-important sleep and wake hormones… yep this is called you circadian rhythm my dears .
BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION
The second most common cause of insomnia is blood sugar issues …90% of people are unaware of this problem until the detrimental effects begin to show . because we simply cant connect that the jumping your insulin levels all over the shop during the day seriously effects your hormones (INSULIN IS A HORMONE MY FRIENDS!!!)
This is happening if You’re eat every 2-3 hours all day (snacking and grazing have been debunked as that 90’s myth of increasing metabolism .. instead its 3 meals a day which regulate sugar levels in turn making your metabolism most efficient . ” this constant eating results your body expecting to get fed every 2-3 hours, right, sooo good luck going to bed at the end of the day and expecting to sleep through the night, youre going to wake up when your blood sugar drops enough for you body to release adrenaline and wake you up (probs HANGRY as F*ck)
TIPS TO COUNTERACT THIS:
1. eat 3-4 square meals a day with no snacking .. like a human
2.Eat whole foods – avoid processed foods. - your body understands these and utilizes them properly .. Gummy worms and Diet Coke … are basically completely alien to your insides
3. Eat Protein in the morning and carbs at night .. counter intuitive to what we previously thought .. but carbs in the evening of the SAFE KIND like root vegetables actually aid in the release of serotonin which switches on the signals to sleep (serotonin is the “happy” chemical yes, which also explains why depressed people also suffer from insomnia)
*NOTE a sweet potato , yam or white potato are the perfect carbs to keep blood sugar levels smooth sailing through the whole slumber session (a great book detailing this is Potato’s Not Prozac , a worthy read for any food addict or diabetic )
Research has demonstrated that nighttime light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin, the major hormone secreted by the pineal gland that controls sleep and wake cycles, so keep your room dark as possible , funnily enough a study also showed that even if a source of light was pointed at a sleeping persons foot (not in eyesight) the body start to cycle into the waking faze … WOW ! Nowadays we have so much light emitting form tech things like phones and computers , its worth downloading the FREE program – f.lux which switches you laptop screen to AMBER lights , enabling optimal circadian rhythm .. And is also less geeky then wearing amber glasses ..

Women are most vulnerable to eating a diet that is too low in fat.
what personal diet philosophy do you follow (supplements/plant based/ancestral etc ) ?
I think balance is the key and therefore don’t follow any diet that is too restrictive. However I will cook foods from scratch, using foods that are as close to nature as nature intended. This means my diet is naturally high in plant based foods and proteins. I do believe that if you start from a foundation of wellness, a little of what you fancy is part of that balance. I guess it can be summarized by the 80/20 approach. I only take Food-state supplements as this is the way in which the body is attuned to receiving nutrients – not as synthetically generated isolates as found in many supplements. I see outstanding results from using these natural low dose nutrients both in my own health and my clients.

- Start the day with a protein based breakfast. This has been shown to reduce erratic eating and energy levels during the day. A good example would be poached eggs and spinach on rye bread or a quick protein smoothie of greek yoghurt, greens, frozen berries and chia seeds.
- Eat lightly in the evenings at least 3 times per week. Many of us tend to eat our main meal at night. This is a time when digestion can be more sluggish so eating lighter at this time, gives the digestive tract a needed rest.
- Start the day with hot water and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. This support liver and digestive wellbeing.

The most touted benefit of chia seeds is their high omega-3 content. However this is in the form of short-chain ALA omega-3. This needs to be converted to long-chain EPA/DHA omega-3. remember hemp oil is a heat sensitive oil , so scorching hot soup is not a friend , unless you want rancid oil (ewwy) .. try having some on the table and drizzling over your pumpkin soup with a few toasted pumpkin seeds

I Recently started reading into and attempting the Ayurvedic Approach to health , which if you click the link I’ve already given you a run down of the “Art Of Living”.. and a link to find your Dosha Type .. Which is actually a really fun little quiz so here it is again:
Below is the book I’ve been Reading which has the quiz in it .. and i’ve .. to the bewilderment of all my friends been subjecting them and grouping them into their Dosha Types .. and have actually become super quick at picking peoples before they do the test… so fortune teller I know.. the amazing thing has been how spot on they are .. right down to their food preferences and even what exercise of work environment they thrive in.
These are the 3 Dosha’s .. which Ayurvedic medicine believes we are all comprised of however individually havegreater constitution of 1 primary type.. sometimes 2 (lucky!) .. and an imbalance in our bodies of the 3 doshas is the basis for all mental and physical problems , including disease and weight problems as well as depression
Im a typical Vata .. and recently have decided to follow the rules of my dosha type .. i must say it makes sense .. however I’m a vegan , sooooo its kinda hard when your Dosha type thrives of dairy and warm food .. so i’ve had to find alternatives , but whatever . it explains my former obsession for eating tubs of yogurt in the bath… now that i think about it .. that was depressingly Bridget Jone’s of me .. especially as it usually happened saturday nights , with Will & Grace playing on my laptop.. sometimes I do a mental mantra reminding myself i’m only 22 years old ..
But one amazing supplement the research i’ve been doing has turned me onto is ASHWAGANDHA .. yes is ass rapingly difficult to pronounce

but Ashwaganda its shown to have amazing properties in the body .. no matter who you are . its worth a try .. especially if you have a high stress situation going on and has also shown to
- normalizes levels of hydrocortisone,
- causes the size of the adrenal glands to return to normal,
- increases thyroid hormone levels,
- decreases inflammatory cytokines,
- decreases oxidizing agents that can trigger inflammation,
- decreases brain chemicals associated with anxiety,
- markedly improves stamina and energy, and

we f*cked up .. with AGAVE.. sorry guys but its official .. this delicious golden syrup aint no health food its highly processed and has a high percentage fructose sugars.. its up there with HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP .. woops that processed sugar everyone is alway saying is killing us all and making our children hyper little c*nts …But seriously Fructose is the chain of sugar in fruit yes.. but it comes in minimal amounts in fruits .. coupled with fiber therefore is digested and released slowly and the bulk stops you from overeating .
BUTTT when you condense it into a sweet syrup of high amounts of fructose its not good AGAVE IS ACTUALLY HIGHER IN FRUCTOSE THAN HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP with anywhere from 60-97 percent of it containing the fast acting sugars which cause weight gain , liver damage and inflammation .
Dr.Joseph Mercola recently wrote an article on the issue stating ” Most agave “nectar” or agave “syrup” is nothing more than a laboratory-generated super-condensed fructose syrup, devoid of virtually all nutrient value, and offering you metabolic misfortune in its place.” … oh god
so put the squeeze-y bottles down . step away from the syrupy devil.
