I’m not a member of the Kale Club

I always feel like I’m chewing on a Nappy when I eat it .. so rough .. so rigid … and so needy .. you basically need to massage it better than a 90 minute Swedish Remedial to make it somewhat supple… and agreeable .. which actually does sound a lot like myself , so despite being the human equivalent of KALE , I simply don’t get the hype .

I do appreciate it being the Gateway Vegetable (insert WEED joke here) for healthy living . but the same way a stoner can get locked into the monotony of lighting up daily “just cos” I think the other vegetables have been overlooked (this is not an incentive to try various drugs, this is just poor writing on my behalf… please stick to BUTTON mushrooms)

Jennifer Di Noia of William Paterson University, looked at 17 important nutrients naturally occuring in food (fiber, protein, potassium, Vitamin A, B12, D) and calculated how much of those nutrients were found in a 100-calorie serving. The results are interesting. Watercress ranks as the most nutrient-rich vegetable, while other leafy greens like chard, chicory and lettuce rank well. Turnips, sweet potatoes and grapefruits performed worse.

What do you do?

I’ve got a case of the octopus hands and a runaway creative brain so always liked to do more than one thing.
I work with clients Coaching and Tarot Reading. I had quite the tough adventure in my early 20’s and I work from everything that it taught me and then side by side with that I tune in to all my clients and know how to help them. Just give us a quick sentence of explanation for the services you offer?

I see myself as being able to shove people back into their skin (but that doesn’t sound so eloquent on a business card). I want everyone to know it’s ok not to feel ok, learn how to find their own balance through self-knowledge and awareness and reclaim their personal power.

At a base level I have (from having always felt weird and not understood) a huge passion to help people feel less alone.

You do coaching; What’s the most common issues people are coming to you about?

Everyone has the exact same set of fears just packaged up in entirely unique ways.
I see a lot of people with anxiety and types of unprocessed traumas. I also work as a bit of a big sister to those new to their own spiritual connection. I help people get to know their inner dialogue and shift fearful thoughts and negative mindsets. My clients are usually at a point of change and are feeling a bit lost. I guide them in locating why and help them rebuild their own reconnect the mind-body-spirit. My clients are also btw the best people ever met. It’s eye opening and heart warming to hang out with them.

If you could tell your 23 year old self something… what would it be?

“You aren’t crazy – everything is exactly how it is supposed to be.”

Now we’re a health blog, you’re very in touch with your core self and body, how does that inform your health and eating habits ?

I have learned to listen to body from having had and recovered from chronic illness and PTSD in the past. I know when I’m in and out of balance, instantly. I think it’s so easy for people to be overwhelmed by what to eat or how to live and if you take it down to the basics it’s so much easier and you will feel better. Learn about yourself and go from there. Like Kale may be cool but if you are intolerant to it then it’s not going to be your superhero.

I have an autoimmune thyroid disorder called Hashimotos and so everything is aligned to care for it. If I don’t look after myself or I get stressed then I get quite ill, quickly.

At the heart of everything I just don’t want to feel shit! so I’m super passionate about being kind and interested in myself. Every day I just endeavor to at least try.

What are the 5 healthy life tips you do daily?

– I have a morning practice that involves committing to sitting down on a cushion and valuing my time, so I start everyday with writing, drawing, tarot or just remembering to breathe. This is my balancing thread that holds me together.
– I connect in some way with someone that I love. I’m an introvert and I love spending time on my own and so I have to remember to send antennae out.
– I try and move in some way – Pilates and walking suits me but even often it’s just stretching out into a great starfish shape in my bed.
– Feel all my feelings and know they are ok.
– Honour my creativity. If I don’t paint or make something I feel sad and mad.

Tell us for real.. is there anything into newspaper horoscopes ?

Having done some ghost writing of horoscopes in the past I was certainly up to my eyeballs in transits, planets and all the detail! But, I was working with the coolest people…. So I can’t tell you for sure but certainly in the papers it’s watered down and you see a tiny snippet, and that will only inspire people to think its nonsense.
If you want to really want to get it, study your own chart, an exact map of the sky when you were born. I’ve never seen anyone do that and not be at least a lot in awe. It’s a beautiful, especially for self-development. Destiny is your partner in crime.

What is the process behind creating your in-depth and insightful Tarotscope readings ?

My process is that I sit with my cards and energetically tune into the readers for who I am writing for and then pick a card for each sign. I can talk to dead people?
Probably everything I experience is spooky, but to me it’s just how it is, and it’s awesome. Having said that I LOVE spooky stories, the old-fashioned horror movie kind and I like history.
I’m hoping my future husband is going to tell me ghost stories and at the same time be cool with the idea that they are probably also listening to him read the story. (Hello?)

I digress though, here is one for you.

When I was 17 I woke up one night and there was a woman standing by my bed. She was clear as day and watching me, but not in a scary way, she had a kind of sweet aunt vibe too her. So I was like cool a ghost, or what I’d call an apparition now, as it’s different to how I see spirits now.
The great thing is that I grew up in a house over 400 years old. So it transpired that over the years people would pop by because their great great uncle so and so lived there and we would let them look around. Every person who has ever come or knew our house would ask, “Have you seen the ghost?” and my Mum would say yes my daughter has, and we all has the same exact description of her. OOOooooooOOOOooo. Apparently three sisters used to share the house and they were known for watching over whoever lived there. I always thought it was cool, the house had the best vibes.

My mum also would also, very often hear a chorus singing in the attic.

Something else. When I dream that someone I know is crying then they always are in life, I check on them – I’ve never had this be wrong. It’s lovely and sad all at the same time

Its slow simmered animal bones (how do you make that sound normal?) along with all the gelatinous and collegen filled marrow/connective tissue and joints (again sounds gross. Reason to broth :

I have a feeling  I don’t even need to detail this one anymore , last year fermenty goodness was all the rage . Whether Kombucha, sauerkraut, Kvaas, miso, tempeh or kefir was your crack . remember hemp oil is a heat sensitive oil , so scorching hot soup is not a friend , unless you want rancid oil (ewwy) .. try having some on the table and drizzling over your pumpkin soup with a few toasted pumpkin seeds

I came to this one with trepidation, i’d heard of this combination because of The Master Cleanse and wasn’t keen on an al caliente kinda beverage . but the coconut nectar (so glad to not see AGAVE for once!) and the fresh lemon was so precisely blended the kick only came at the end but nothing lasting .. so basically you get the benefits of the epic cleansing minus the face grimace . arrribbaaa

I found myself sipping it in bed and smiling , its like eating sweets but without the guilt . Again this one wasn’t on my juice cleanse but I was given a bottle any whoo .. called the Red Pineapple it features pineapple, red apple, carrots, beets, ginger.  I was so thankful that the ginger didnt have that overtaking zest most gingery juices has.. people go mental on the ginger in a juice .. its like why!! its so strong .. my throats on fire . anyway its an all round good guy .. I was actually getting the ol’ tickle throat when I started the cleanse so nailed this bad boy and the tickly throat turned into .. nothing! I think from all the bromelain (anti inflammatory in pineapple) Vit C (beets) antibiotic properties (ginger) its def a juice to put down in the Food As Medicine Book. 

The Creamy Dreamy One

Oh.Mah.Gawd this is a game changer , Fruveju had perfected the cleanse and a lot has to do with this little bad boy, it tastes like a creamy tangy almost yogurty milkshake .. its just sweet and thick enough .. I’m literally “mmmmmhhmmm”ing recalling it .. I don’t even know why someone isn’t selling cartons of cashew milk .. almond milk can go bl*ow itself .. RECIPE 
 
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder (less if fresh root) 

1 cup milk substitute (rice , almond, oat whatever go crazy!) 

1/3 cup water 

1-2 Tbsp. coconut oil (optional but helpful for the flu-ey people because its of antibacterial properties)

raw honey/stevia/maple syrup to taste

ALSO PLAY AROUND WITH THE AMOUNTS OF TURMERIC and sweetness.. when you hit that perfect personal preference this is friggin delicious 

Boil water and turmeric in small saucepan over medium-high heat for 8 minutes (the turmeric must be fully cooked if not powdered ). Meanwhile, bring the milk and coconut oil to boiling point in a separate pan and remove from heat. Combine the two mixtures and add sweetness of your choice .

My Ayurvedic Obsession & ASHWAGANDHA SUPPLEMENTS

I Recently started reading into and attempting the Ayurvedic Approach to health , which if you click the link I’ve already given you a run down of  the “Art Of Living”.. and a link to find your Dosha Type .. Which is actually a really fun little quiz so here it is again:

Below is the book I’ve been Reading which has the quiz in it .. and i’ve .. to the bewilderment of all my friends been subjecting them and grouping them into their Dosha Types .. and have actually become super quick at picking peoples before they do the test… so fortune teller I know.. the amazing thing has been how spot on they are .. right down to their food preferences and even what exercise of work environment they thrive in.

Im a typical Vata .. and recently have decided to follow the rules of my dosha type .. i must say it makes sense .. however I’m a vegan , sooooo its kinda hard when your Dosha type thrives of dairy and warm food .. so i’ve had to find alternatives , but whatever . it explains my former obsession for eating tubs of yogurt in the bath… now that i think about it .. that was depressingly Bridget Jone’s of me .. especially as it usually happened saturday nights , with Will & Grace playing on my laptop.. sometimes I do a mental mantra reminding myself i’m only 22 years old ..

But one amazing supplement the research i’ve been doing has turned me onto is ASHWAGANDHA .. yes is ass rapingly difficult to pronounce

although its meant for VATA types (feeling a bit like this post sounds like im speaking a foreign language or have become a member of captain planet “earth,wind,fire.. what sign are you!”  ughh)

but Ashwaganda its shown to have amazing properties in the body .. no matter who you are . its worth a try .. especially if you have a high stress situation going on and has also shown to

  • normalizes levels of hydrocortisone,
  • causes the size of the adrenal glands to return to normal,
  • increases thyroid hormone levels,
  • decreases inflammatory cytokines,
  • decreases oxidizing agents that can trigger inflammation,
  • decreases brain chemicals associated with anxiety,
  • markedly improves stamina and energy, and
  • turns on and improves white blood cell function to fight infections.

Watermelon Slush Smoothie

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 small watermelon
  • 2 ½ cups unsweetened almond milk
  • Mint sprigs
DIRECTIONS

Cut the watermelon into small chunks and freeze overnight. When fully frozen, blend the icy watermelon pieces and the almond milk in a blender until smooth. Pour into a glass and garnish with a few sprigs of mint. Enjoy!

Our bodies didn’t evolve like that. Breakfast should be eaten when we first feel hungry in the day, not because cereal companies are telling you to chow down corn flakes at 7am.
You will have more energy if you actually delay your morning meal until you are feeling hungry – when the best thing to eat is fruit, a green smoothie or a fresh vegetable juice!

Ingredients:
4-5 large handfuls of leafy greens – Kim recommends romaine lettuce, kale and spinach
Parsley or Coriander (if taste doesn’t bother you – very detoxifying)
1 liter of water (filtered is best!)

1 Apple (cored)
1 Pear
1 Banana
Juice ½ Lemon
1 cup Ice

Instructions
Place ingredients in a big blender (the more powerful, the better and more appetizing your smoothies) – water and greens first, blitz, then add fruit and ice.
Blend until smooth.

whats your health tip?
I always take Vitamin C and then I have a routine of these three shakes every morning:

– When I wake up, I squeeze a lemon, grapefruit and an orange to make a juice for my husband, my son and I.

– Then I mix a green powder [Original Superfood Greens from Whole Foods], wheatgrass [The Power of Grass, Whole Foods], chia seeds and water shake. It’s disgusting but you just have to drink it all at once.

Three Unexpected sugar alternatives , that are unprocessed and deliciously good for you .. i love stevia , but i know the processed liquids and powders are definitely not great for the body , and the dried leaves are impossible to find AM.I.RITE??

the bestest: Yacon Syrup

Yacon syrup comes from the yacón plant and was used heavily by the INCAS it has plentiful nutritional properties and few calories alongside low sugar levels. yacón roots have been eaten by people with diabetes and digestive, renal problems .

its low in calories because the yacon contains up to 50% FOS (fructooligosacharides) consuming it  doesnt increase blood glucose (hence its diabetic friendliness) like every other sugar , fructose or glucose …and is instead a form of dietary fibre and sugar polymer both not absorbed by our bodies but instead  regulates good intestinal flora and boosts the immune system by feeding the probiotic bacteria( GOOD STUFF- NOT JUST IN YOGURT) .

It is usually made similarily to maple syrup using an evaporator and tastes similar to molasses , or caramelised sugar

GROSS WIKI FACT: In a study by Genta et al. it was shown that a daily intake of yacon syrup produced a significant decrease in body weight, waist circumference and body mass index when given to obese pre-menopausal women

mmm buttery : Lucuma Powder

Comes in a powder form and is derived from the lacuma fruit .

With benefits of being low in acidity ,low in sugar and contains an excellent source of  fiber,  B3, and minerals.beta-carotene, niacin, and iron

the taste is slightly butterscothy .. toffee-ness  good for mixing into tea or coffee or smoothies

SHWEETNESS : Dates Syrup 

mmm yes the finger licking caramel goodness … yes the fruit! it qualifies as a whole food.with only one ingredient in the syrup .. soaked /steeped/evaporated dates.. depending on if you make or buy it . similar texture and taste to molasses or dark agave.

is the least tooth achy sweet of all the syrups like maple and agave etc

contains potassium (more than boo-na-na’s!) , magnesium, calcium, iron, riboflavin, niacin, folate, phosphorus, pantothenic acid, and vitamin B-6.

Inflammation of the body …

When the body acknowledges a substance that is foreign – take for example a splinter in your finger .. it causes the effected area to become inflamed – which is basically the immune system sending out infection fighters . However the same can happen in regard to foods that don’t assimilate into the body or are seen as alien (mainly processed foods and dairy) which put the body into a state of constant inflammation this inflammation has strongly been linked to cancer, autoimmune diseases like Lupus, and Crohn’s disease as well as Psoriasis, Diabetes, Allergies, Arthritis, Atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Heart Disease and SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT GAIN /Inability to lose weight.
