Advice from A Biohacker.. Will Of Upgraded Ape

IMG_8123Meet Will Barron . Creator , Founder , Ape enthusiast (i made that one up) but he does have a lot of apey cartoons on his amazing webshop , blog , podcast super site

The Upgraded Ape Website

Something he created out of love and necessity having found interest in the “biohacking” world thats so revolutionary in America , his frustration at not being able to access the products that were enabling people like Tim Ferriss and Dave Asprey to optimise  their brains, bodies and productivity  .. so basically creating super humans . He decided to bridge the gap and bring BIOHACKING TO BRITAIN . I know right . we picked his ..correction .. Upgraded super brain and found out the following…

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 10.00.41

how did you get interested in health ?

The story of humble Vitamin D started my fascination with health. I was blown away that this simple Vitamin could influence over 1000 genes within the human genome. After a quick google search I realised I could get my blood levels of serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D tested quickly and cheaply and after raising them to the correct levels I set about seeing what else I could manipulate.

what is the one myth .. that you would love to eradicate forever about health ?

I think peoples health is being screwed up mostly by a lack of responsibility from individuals themselves. The myth that you can eat one particular way (be that SAD, paleo, low carb…) and everything is going to be OK is wrong. People need to take responsibility to see what they personally need to eat, how much they need to work out and what they need to do to prevent cognitive decline and then do those things over the long term.

what do you think the trends in health and wellness will be in the next 5 years?

I think the ability for the average person to manipulate their brain neurochemistry is going to be the most important health development of the next 5 years. Cognitive decline is going to become the biggest health issue facing humanity alongside obesity as diets get worse and people live longer.

I think in time it will be commonplace to take a neuroprotective nootropic drug like piracetam in the morning alongside your omega 3s and vitamin d supplements.

Screen Shot 2013-03-13 at 09.16.57

your brand has quite a strong foot in the Paleo world , its quite largely misunderstood as cross fitting steak eaters.. whats the real scoop?

The real scoop is that the word ‘paleo’ is used to sell cook books and diets. The movement started with an emphasis on eating real, wholefoods which is what I wholeheartedly support. As long as you’re eating a bunch of whole veg, a decent amount of fats from things like butter and avocado and a fist size of quality meat a day you’re doing well.

IMG_8124

whats a day in the life of your plate look like ?

I intermittent fast and so I have a black coffee in the mornings using freshly ground Bioupgraded – High Performance Coffee beans and then have lunch around 1-2pm. Lunch is usually a salad of some kind – organic baby gem lettuce, cucumber, celery, avocado, tomatoes with some kind of meet like salmon or chicken. I make a little salad dressing using MCT oil and a squeeze of lemon too.

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 13.07.47

I enjoy cooking and so my evening meal could be anything. For example tonight I’m going to making slow cooked, sticky Chinese ribs and a tomato and basil soup. I’ll likely throw some kind of fruit cocktail together for a desert too. Random but delicious.

what supplements would you recommend for overall health ?

Vitamin D and Omega 3s (with Krill Oil being the best source) are essential for most people. After that it really depends on your mental and physical performance and training goals.

IMG_8126 IMG_8128

ABOVE: some of the supplements Will Curates on the site

who would you LOVE to interview on your podcast ?

It’s an obvious one, but Tim Ferriss was a huge influence for me to track my own health biomarkers and then use this data to improve them. Importantly his original book the 4 hour work week was massive inspiration for me to take control of my life and become and entrepreneur.

I’d love to interview Tim and dive deep into what makes him tick on the mindset kind of level.

TimFerrissExperimentLifeHacker

exercise is important , but is it cardio , HIIT , cross fit , yoga ?!? the debate rolls on , whats your 2 cents ?

Yoga is incredible and is something that I’m really into at the moment. Being tall I’ve never had decent flexibility and so it’s a new side of being ‘in shape’ that I’ve never really experimented with before.

gym-monkey

I do a lot of rock climbing but when I’m not training specifically for that my weekly break down is this –

–       HIIT once a week to increase mitochondria numbers and function (plus countless epigenetic knock on effects)

–       ‘Lift heavy stuff’ twice a week which consists of 6-8 reps x3 sets of squats, deadlift, bench press, overhead press and a few other compound movements.

–       Specific training for niggles. For example I smashed up my clavicle last year sledding and I’m still having issues with my infraspinatus being tight and so I do daily exercises to strengthen the muscles around this at the moment.

what is the one healthy lifestyle habit you think can improve everyones wellbeing?

3 out of 4 visits to US doctors are for stress related ailments, stress is also the cause of 60% of all human illness and disease. Stress related aliments costs the US economy $300 billion a year (obesity costs way less at $200 billion).

Most of the people reading this right now are likely stressed, however there is a solution. It’s simple, free, we’ve been doing it for thousands of years – meditation.

If everyone relaxed their brains for 20 minutes a day by meditating the world would instantly become a healthier place.

1 sentence about sugar (ha!)

Sugar is fine, in moderation, with real food, in the PM (as it effects your blood glucose and so insulin levels differently throughout the day).

1 sentence about FAT!

Fat isn’t the devil, most of your brain is made out of it!

 Screen Shot 2014-02-01 at 07.24.53

1 sentence about Protein

Moderate protein guys, otherwise it can cause serious inflammation.

Screen Shot 2013-04-16 at 14.32.58

1 sentence about carbs

Carbs = insulin spike which is a useful tool if used correctly.

Chris Kresser & Aspirin .. slightly personal

this post is weirdly personal … dun dun dunnnn

image

So firstly Chris Kresser is a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of integrative medicine. if you dont know him .. you basically don’t know anything about functional medicine and I’m about to blow your mind .

His website http://chriskresser.com is a vast vast wealth of knowledge about everything from Gluten intolerance to baby nutrition .. in face he wrote a book called The Healthy Baby Code .. so he know babies .

Screen Shot 2014-08-08 at 08.24.50

so before you get engulfed in a deep dive of his blog/website and free E-books .. which really shouldnt be free .. so we’re ripping him off something major .. so now we know he’s charitable .. do you love him as much as i do ??

Probably his most useful resource is his PODCAST .. where people can record questions for him to answer … ad boy does he answers .

SO THE PERSONAL ANGLE … my mum has a blood disorder so i thought on a whim and a prayer i would write in asking about her current aspirin prescription and illness.. and i woke up this morning with a new little podcast nestled like a sweet little egg in my hand (Hi Iphone glued to head whilst sleeping) – so unhealthy .

He answers the or paradigm that ASPIRIN IS FINE FOR LONG TERM USE …. so even thought the question was specific about my mums condition its also so useful for those trying to figure out the pro’s and cons of the little white pill .

NOTE* yes my voice is snoooozzeeefest and i canny pronounce people words sometimes

here’s the youtube version of the 30min conversation or go to the podcast on ITUNES

What do you do?

I’ve got a case of the octopus hands and a runaway creative brain so always liked to do more than one thing.
I work with clients Coaching and Tarot Reading. I had quite the tough adventure in my early 20’s and I work from everything that it taught me and then side by side with that I tune in to all my clients and know how to help them. I speak to groups and run workshops to share my favorite topics, write for a few different publications and also paint. I’m an artist at heart. I like to make things.
Right now I’m also currently working on a jewelry collection and creating some things for my shop, they are what I’m most excited about right now!

Screen Shot 2014-08-03 at 13.10.29

Just give us a quick sentence of explanation for the services you offer?

I see myself as being able to shove people back into their skin (but that doesn’t sound so eloquent on a business card). I want everyone to know it’s ok not to feel ok, learn how to find their own balance through self-knowledge and awareness and reclaim their personal power.

At a base level I have (from having always felt weird and not understood) a huge passion to help people feel less alone.

You do coaching; What’s the most common issues people are coming to you about?

Everyone has the exact same set of fears just packaged up in entirely unique ways.
I see a lot of people with anxiety and types of unprocessed traumas. I also work as a bit of a big sister to those new to their own spiritual connection. I help people get to know their inner dialogue and shift fearful thoughts and negative mindsets. My clients are usually at a point of change and are feeling a bit lost. I guide them in locating why and help them rebuild their own reconnect the mind-body-spirit. My clients are also btw the best people ever met. It’s eye opening and heart warming to hang out with them.

Screen Shot 2014-07-30 at 12.26.20

If you could tell your 23 year old self something… what would it be?

“You aren’t crazy – everything is exactly how it is supposed to be.”

Now we’re a health blog, you’re very in touch with your core self and body, how does that inform your health and eating habits ?

I have learned to listen to body from having had and recovered from chronic illness and PTSD in the past. I know when I’m in and out of balance, instantly. I think it’s so easy for people to be overwhelmed by what to eat or how to live and if you take it down to the basics it’s so much easier and you will feel better. Learn about yourself and go from there. Like Kale may be cool but if you are intolerant to it then it’s not going to be your superhero.

I have an autoimmune thyroid disorder called Hashimotos and so everything is aligned to care for it. If I don’t look after myself or I get stressed then I get quite ill, quickly.

At the heart of everything I just don’t want to feel shit! so I’m super passionate about being kind and interested in myself. Every day I just endeavor to at least try.

Screen Shot 2014-08-03 at 13.24.26

What are the 5 healthy life tips you do daily?

– I have a morning practice that involves committing to sitting down on a cushion and valuing my time, so I start everyday with writing, drawing, tarot or just remembering to breathe. This is my balancing thread that holds me together.
– I connect in some way with someone that I love. I’m an introvert and I love spending time on my own and so I have to remember to send antennae out.
– I try and move in some way – Pilates and walking suits me but even often it’s just stretching out into a great starfish shape in my bed.
– Feel all my feelings and know they are ok.
– Honour my creativity. If I don’t paint or make something I feel sad and mad.

Screen Shot 2014-07-30 at 19.10.58

Tell us for real.. is there anything into newspaper horoscopes ?

Having done some ghost writing of horoscopes in the past I was certainly up to my eyeballs in transits, planets and all the detail! But, I was working with the coolest people…. So I can’t tell you for sure but certainly in the papers it’s watered down and you see a tiny snippet, and that will only inspire people to think its nonsense.
If you want to really want to get it, study your own chart, an exact map of the sky when you were born. I’ve never seen anyone do that and not be at least a lot in awe. It’s a beautiful, especially for self-development. Destiny is your partner in crime.

What is the process behind creating your in-depth and insightful Tarotscope readings ?

My process is that I sit with my cards and energetically tune into the readers for who I am writing for and then pick a card for each sign. Then I sit and channel them aka I just start typing until I’ve finished. Practical magic. (You can read my monthlies on thenuminous.net and get a free 2014 scope from my site!)

TAROTSCOPES-MAY20141

Now. We’re all thinking it and sure you’ve been asked a million times, any spooky stories ?

I can talk to dead people?
Probably everything I experience is spooky, but to me it’s just how it is, and it’s awesome. Having said that I LOVE spooky stories, the old-fashioned horror movie kind and I like history.
I’m hoping my future husband is going to tell me ghost stories and at the same time be cool with the idea that they are probably also listening to him read the story. (Hello?)

I digress though, here is one for you.

When I was 17 I woke up one night and there was a woman standing by my bed. She was clear as day and watching me, but not in a scary way, she had a kind of sweet aunt vibe too her. So I was like cool a ghost, or what I’d call an apparition now, as it’s different to how I see spirits now.
The great thing is that I grew up in a house over 400 years old. So it transpired that over the years people would pop by because their great great uncle so and so lived there and we would let them look around. Every person who has ever come or knew our house would ask, “Have you seen the ghost?” and my Mum would say yes my daughter has, and we all has the same exact description of her. OOOooooooOOOOooo. Apparently three sisters used to share the house and they were known for watching over whoever lived there. I always thought it was cool, the house had the best vibes.

My mum also would also, very often hear a chorus singing in the attic.

Something else. When I dream that someone I know is crying then they always are in life, I check on them – I’ve never had this be wrong. It’s lovely and sad all at the same time

Henrietta Norton: A Nutritional Therapist Dishes On Diet , Why Fat Is Fab and Wild Nutrition

Screen Shot 2014-05-21 at 18.14.48

Henrietta Norton Is a UK based  Nutritional therapist ,HUFFINGTON POST contributor , member of Guild of Health Writers, published author , Health Speaker , mother AND co-founder of the whole food nutritional supplement company Wild Nutrition … AND TAKE A BREATH! I don’t think I’ve ever used that many comma’s to describe one person…oh I forgot she was also named as ES magazine’s ‘ top 10 health gurus to have on speed dial’

So basically whatever she’s taking we want right ?

She’s not only been helping out clients deal with health issues , mainly in the realm of woman’s health and fertility (she wrote a book on Endometriosis) she’s now embarked on a new endeavour to provide whole-food derived supplements that are free of fillers, bulking agents or synthetic ingredients.. out of neccessity to provide her own clients with supplements that were actually functional and healthful unlike so many commercially produced products on the market … being one of the only brands available that refuses to use plastics! she’s so far ahead of the game.. we had to pick her brain .

*note : she is currently pregnant .. is this woman a superhero ?!??! what the what!?!?

what is the one health myth you wish the general public would just put to rest?

Fat is bad for your health. If meat  comes from naturally raised, grass-fed or organic animals, keep the skin on! It will provide valuable fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, D and E but also amino acids, CLA and AA which have vital role in neurological development (11% of the brain is made up of AA), gut health and reducing prematurely ageing skin. Women are most vulnerable to eating a diet that is too low in fat.

Screen Shot 2014-05-21 at 23.42.16

what personal diet philosophy do you follow (supplements/plant based/ancestral etc )  ?

I think balance is the key and therefore don’t follow any diet that is too restrictive. However I will cook foods from scratch, using foods that are as close to nature as nature intended. This means my diet is naturally high in plant based foods and proteins.  I do believe that if you start from a foundation of wellness, a little of what you fancy is part of that balance. I guess it can be summarized by the 80/20 approach. I only take Food-state supplements as this is the way in which the body is attuned to receiving nutrients – not as synthetically generated isolates as found in many supplements. I see outstanding results from using these natural low dose nutrients both in my own health and my clients.

ABOVE: WILD NUTRITION’S SUPPLEMENTS

what are the most common health problems you encounter ? and do you think a common thread connects them ?

My work specialises in women’s health and the most common symptoms I have with these clients are sub-fertility and menstrual irregularities such as PCOS, endometriosis, PMS and poor skin health. Most of these are accompanied by digestive imbalances and chronic stress.

Screen Shot 2014-05-22 at 00.15.51

what are simple healthful things people can start doing ASAP ?

  • Getting more sleep. Sleeping between 10.45-6am has been shown to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and support your bodies adaption to external stress.
  • Start the day with a protein based breakfast. This has been shown to reduce erratic eating and energy levels during the day. A good example would be poached eggs and spinach on rye bread  or a quick protein smoothie of greek yoghurt, greens, frozen berries and chia seeds.
  • Eat lightly in the evenings at least 3 times per week. Many of us tend to eat our main meal at night. This is a time when digestion can be more sluggish so eating lighter at this time, gives the digestive tract a needed rest.
  • Start the day with hot water and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. This support liver and digestive wellbeing.

Lets Get Mystical .. Q&A With Ruby Warrington Creator Of The Numinous

Screen Shot 2013-12-02 at 15.37.15
Meet Ruby Warrington , babe Journalist who’s pieces have been published in The Sunday Times , InStyle, and Stylist magazines to name a few .She’s travelled the globe interviewing the likes of Miley Cyrus (pre-twerk!) and Alexa Chung .. but this is a lady of difference and alongside her day job has become the  Creator .. or Mother ?!?! lets say Mother of the beautiful and niche website
A site unlike any other …for all things new age, meditative, spiritual and other worldy .. however all the while being modern .. its basically a cool girls spiritual den.
The articles vary from the latest fashions all the way to Crystal healing . Ruby ‘s  managed to traverse the gap of the mystical and modern beautifully .. And will become a port of call for all conscious Gen Y’s
We Picked Her Big Zen Brain ..

1.How was the Numinous Born?

I first heard the word ‘Numinous’ – meaning ‘that which is unknown or unknowable’ – in conversation with my friend Shelley Von Strunckel, who is a very eminent astrologer and all ’round mystical oracle. I immediately fell in love with the concept of ‘the numinous’ – aren’t our interactions with the big un-namable sometimes our most profound experiences? – and thought it would be a brilliant name for a chic and fashionable magazine about the esoteric.Screen Shot 2013-12-02 at 15.47.15

2.You have some amazing contributors to the site , have you naturally sought out people with a similar outlook

on life , or have they been drawn to you ? basically where do you find these awesome people ?

I’m used to reaching out to people for interviews and commissioning writers – I have 15 years experience as a magazine editor behind me, so it sort of comes naturally! But I have been surprised and really delighted by the number of people who’ve also approached me about contributing to the site since I launched. It feels like people have been waiting for this platform to appear.

3.why do you think people have such a hard time seeing harmony with the “mystical” world and the hustle and bustle of “real” life ?

Because I think there is this very outdated idea that to be a spiritual being – i.e. connected to the mystical or divine – you need to sever you ties to the material world. But since the 1960s – the dawning of the Age of Aquarius – ideas about how we ‘should’ behave and what’s right for each individual have become much less rigid. We are all essentially spirit in human form, and we all experience the numinous –Asos.com addiction, high powered career in finance or not!

4.Can you give all the sceptics a few examples of tangible events or anecdotes where you’ve really seen how being more mindful can positively effect your life?

I wrote about a recent experience I had though my kundalini yoga practise here – it really blew my mind!
Screen Shot 2013-12-02 at 15.40.53

5.How does one stay spiritual , but still want to gain wealth and success .. i think people assume one detrimentally effects the other ?

(I feel like I answered this one above! But…) The older I get and the more I connect with the numinous, my definition of ‘success’ is changing. It used to mean being able to buy my first Marc Jacobs bag (a truly AWESOME moment), but these days success is more about the manifestation of my heart’s desires, and seeing the tangible results of my positive action in the world. Of course I still want Marc Jacobs bags, Marc Jacobs bags are beautiful, but by no means does this detract from my understanding of myself as a spiritual being.

6.Reading material ..what are some books thats have really helped you on your path?

I recently read Marianne Williamson’s ‘The Law of Divine Compensation’ – which gets into the subject above in a really accessibly way.
20120729-super-soul-sunday-marianne-williamson-16-600x411

7.what part does nutrition play in your life?

Wow – what part doesn’t it play? I am a firm believer in ‘we are what we eat’ and definitely try to choose food that feeds my spirit as much as my body (seeing as the two are really one and the same). Which also means not getting too fanatical about anything food wise, which I think is easy to do when nutrition has become such a loaded and political subject.

8.this is a health blog, any go-to foods or supplements or even regimes that you swear by ? we want to know your secrets!!

I stopped eating meat about three years ago, around the same time I gave up coffee and sugar – and all three things have had a profound effect on my overall wellbeing. Ditching meat has dramatically improved my digestion, and without coffee I am more focussed, sleep better and have more sustained energy. As for sugar – it was like coming off drugs in terms of feeling less anxious and just more happy in general. Kind of amazing! I think I’ve actually got quite a sensitive system and I’m pretty tapped in to how different foods make me feel. On that tip, I also love the way my morning hot water and lemon is so very refreshing.
Screen Shot 2013-12-02 at 16.14.38

9.What is the first article you would advise someone to read .. if you could only choose the one! (i know its cruel) from The Numinous ?

This is really hard! But I wrote a story on a workshop called ‘Becoming Your Own Psychic’ recently, which was sort of like a workout for your third eye. Developing my own intuition has been a big theme for me this year, and I think if we all paid more attention to what the ‘unseen’ – or numinous – is telling us, we’d all have an easier, more magical time. So I guess start here.

10.People cant seem to wrap their heads around tarot cards and star signs .. however we’ve all heard those spooky stories of premonitions and readings becoming reality , have you ever had an amazing experience ?

Louise Androlia, who writes the monthly Tarotscopes for the site, is very talented reader. Once I found myself wide awake at 4am, only to find out later that day that she had been doing a reading for me at exactly that time (she’s based in London, I’m in NYC) because she’d been called by spirit to do so. I woke again later to a a long and incredibly detailed email about exactly what I was going through that that moment in time, along with exactly the advice I needed. As for astrology, I see it more as a tool for self-awareness and personal development than a way to ‘predict’ the future. Learning to read into my chart, with the help of the Astro Twins – which I wrote about here – has helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, as well as my relationships, so much better.
numinous-tarotscopes-nov2013

11.You worked in fashion… how do you traverse modern and mystical lives?

I try to combine the two! For example, I recently did a ‘psychic closet clear out‘ with my friend Psychic Betsy – so much fun! And when I recently bought myself a pair of tiny diamond earrings, I definitely saw it as a way of letting the Universe know I was ready for more abundance in my life…

12.Whats next for the Numinous ?

I have big plans for the site in 2014, all of which will be unveiled in due course! But coming up soon, a very cool line of apparel and a very different take on the traditional women’s mag “new year, new you” January diet. Watch this space!

13. the most testing emotional, spiritual and physical challenges come from relationships , what advice do you have for young women today in terms of being conscious in romantic relationships?

On a very practical level, knowing your astro chart and knowing theirs can be an incredible tool for understanding relationships – what works, what doesn’t and why (of course you also have to be willing to accept what you see). From my personal experience (I’ve been with my husband for 15 years, married for ten), always being my own person first, and being completely honest about that, is what works for me. In other words, never fake it and never pretend it’s working when you know it isn’t.

Yogi Rachel Brathen Talks Body Image, Seinfeld , Pigeon Pose And A Pup Called Ringo

In an era of excessive stimulation and constant viral over exposure (may the twerk RIP ) its nice to come across someone using Social Media for good …
Thats where Rachel Brathen comes in, a travelling yogi with more than  59,000 followers on Facebook and a casual 409k on Instagram … yep she’s basically the Beyonce of yoga .
Her profiles are peppered with beautiful images of her Aruba abode  (yep she lives on a caribbean island FML ) her always-booked-out retreats , a slightly mental whippet named Ringo (he has an Instagram @ringo_thegringo ) as well as jaw dropping pictures of intricate poses mid-ocean .. on a PADDLE BOARD! – This my friends is called SUP yoga (Stand-Up Paddle board Yoga) and Rachel was one of the first people to pioneer the beautiful practice.
It may sound as though she’s living the good life , but Rachel takes her social media power seriously  and with great responsibility .. especially with helping her younger female fans accept their bodies .

RB: I was practicing a lot and found myself one day thinking “if i was teaching this class, i’d do this or that different…” and shortly after that i started teaching to friends and the company i worked for while living in costa rica. i was teaching for a year before i did my first teacher training. when i moved to aruba i started teaching full time – there was no real yoga community on the island and i had a big space to fill! now the yoga community is thriving; it’s beautiful.

DFH:The single healthy tip EVERYONE should incorporate into their hectic lives?

RB:Breathe deeply, drink more water and don’t make life as seriously as your mind wants it to be.

DFH:What makes you laugh ?

RB:My puppies! All the time. Also, Seinfeld. Favorite show. Ever.
 Image

DFH:you have an amazing following, especially on social media sites like Instagram , whats your favourite image you have posted and why  ?

RB:I posted a “love your body love your soul” post a few months ago, describing some of my flaws (stretch makes, i like eating cheese in bed, i have oily skin) and  a couple weeks back a picture of my belly fat. Haha – yes – these is my favorite posts! i get such amazing response every time. I’m sick of seeing only picture perfect posts on instagram, like everyone’s lives are so damn perfect all the time. we choose what we portray. everyone has bad days, everyone feels inadequate from time to time.. and it can be quite intimidating seeing post after post of advanced yoga poses, fitness shots, beach… no one’s life looks like that all the time. i do my best to inspire people and still keep it real. the comments i get on these posts make me tear up, and i get flooded with emails. so much love from people who are just want to accept their bodies as they are.
 image

DFH:how do you stay healthy whilst travelling ?

i don’t always. i try to practice as much as i can – i always have my mat with me. i focus on drinking water. i do gentle stretches every morning and legs up the wall every evening to keep my body happy. i drink beer when i feel like it and never ever ever indulge in “guilty pleasures” – NO GUILT. EVER. Pleasure? Hell yes!

DFH: how would you advise people especially young girls to accept their bodies?

RB:We have to change the way we see ourselves, not the way we eat. Instead of trying to change your body (lose weight, get fitter, slimmer whatever), focus on loving your body first – real change and healthy ways come from there. Stop feeling guilty about what you eat or how you act! I read a fitness magazine the other day and they had a segment called “you ate it? negate it?” – BULLSHIT! It’s stuff like that that promotes insane body images. like, “uh-oh, i accidentally indulged and enjoyed dessert after dinner, or birthday cake, or wine with my friends… How do i get rid of the guilt i feel – how much exercise do i need to do?”. It’s nuts. There are so many more important things in life than obsessing over calories or number on a scale. What do you love to do? What makes you feel good? What makes you really happy? Focus on this! Be happy, first. Don’t take your body so seriously. Life is much more fun when we relax and love ourselves the way we are.

DFH:Favourite Pose?

RB:Double pigeon pose. Or legs up the wall pose. And handstands!
pigpose

DFH:advice for people wanting to become yoga instructors?

RB:Find your own voice. Don’t try to copy your past teachers, or an image of what you want to be as a teacher. Find what makes you unique and use that as a teacher.

DFH:a list of  favourites…

RB:
Website: www.youtube.com. i love cute animal videos!
Film: the darjeeling limited. or jeff who lives at home. or garden state. or sleepless in seattle! i’m a sucker for sappy love stories.
Book: The power of NOW by eckhart toll. and the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafon.
person: all of my sister and brothers (i have five). can’t pick! they’re all much younger than me and i love them to death.
instagram: @ringo_thegringoImage
Mantra: thank you
supplement: none.
beauty product: argan oil!
meal: breakfast 🙂

DFH:finally whats in store in the next 6months ?

oh. so much! we have three more retreats this year, all sold out. i love our retreat groups. i just started working with a media production company so some exciting things in the works!  early next year we go to mexico, then a europe tour, then brazil… oh and at some point i’m getting married!! crazy! it’s going to be a good year 🙂

Katey Denno Celebrity Make Up Artist & Kind Beauty Guru

kateydenno

Katey Denno …

Not only does she look like she’s been painted by the hand of Botticelli , she’s a superbly gifted Make Up artist to the stars, As well as being a  passionate “Green Beauty” advocator .I asked her some questions to clarify non -toxic beauty and just generally pick her brain..

Denno’s a real game changer , she’s one of the forefront pioneers making eco beauty go from green to glam .

In between getting beauties like Isla Fisher , Olivia Wilde and Amanda Seyfried (yes pick your jaw off the floor , she’s that good!) red carpet ready , she personally tests and reviews new products, puts up beautifully filmed tutorials , does workshops and… (take a breath this woman does everything) gives good nutrition advice , hello green smoothies -on her self run site The Beauty Of It Is

Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 09.51.34

I was surprised to  learn her path to make up aptly reads like a film script and exposed that her Kind Beauty approach is a mere aspect of her all round kind approach to life .

So you know by her credentials she’s got great advice

enjoy

How did you get involved in Make Up?

i was a social worker for the first 10 years of my career life and i worked in the realm of HIV/AIDS. I had a lot of clients who were transgendered, mostly male to female. The way they were able to transform themselves through the use of makeup was so amazing to me! it led me to start researching how i could be involved in that world – the world of makeup! i read up on every artist and photographer whose work i admired from all the major magazines, and found photographers to do test shoots with to begin building my book. It was a slow but sure process, and i made sure to remain open to learning everything and anything.

You favour natural products .. why and what are your favourites ?

As a person who’s concerned with what i put into my body with regard to food and drink, i find it just as important to be conscious with what i put on my body- and the bodies of my clients. There are so many good non-toxic lines on the market, with new ones popping up all the time. One of my favorite online stores is spiritbeautylounge.com – she has the most well edited selection of non toxic products on the market!

Ilia, RMS, Kjaer Weis, Lina Hanson, and then there are products sold elsewhere – burt’s bees, roots rose radish, BITE beauty…

best  advice you’ve ever been given ?

Not everybody has to like you.  This is a tough one for me!

What are the new big trends in beauty/looks for 2013?

I never really follow trends… i’m more into timeless, classic beauty.

Beauty from the inside out seems quite important to you .. whats the best foods/supplements/ lifestyle choices for looking great?

Yes it is! The main issues that folks come to me with that make them feel less than great are skin breakouts, and skin dryness/lack of glow associated with aging.

Eating/drinking lots of fresh leafy greens, richly colored berries, and keeping greasy/heavy foods out of your diet is a great place to start. I’m also a proponent of including apple cider vinegar into your diet (1-2 tsp a day in water) plus 1-2 tsp of coconut oil mixed into your food – whether that’s in a smoothie, or your oatmeal, or cooking with it – will keep your liver clean, and your skin glowing, as well as help stave off any sickness. (i haven’t had a cold or the flu in YEARS!). I also believe in keeping a strong yoga practice to work out tension and find focus – it will show on your face, without a doubt.

I find that a hair/skin/nails supplement is generally beneficial to most, and choosing one made from whole foods is a good idea. The vitamin B and D groups are wonderful for keeping our emotional selves and cells in good health.

following on from that .. if I were to open your fridge .. what would you be most proud of or most embarrassed by ?

well, my boyfriend is a chef in a raw, vegan restaurant, so he’s in charge of the fridge – and there are countless containers of his great concoctions in there. I’d be most proud that at least 85 percent of food i keep in the house is organic and or locally grown/produced. We try to be mindful not to be wasteful and we only shop for what we know we’ll be eating within the few days that follow, so there’s never that much in there. Most embarrassed – I have an obsession with frozen sweet peas (organic, of course). i love them, so i keep tons of them on hand. when people open the freezer they’re always confused and surprised to find 15-20 bags of frozen peas on hand!

 Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 11.38.18

When it comes to getting ready for the red carpet what are your go-to fail safe products or techniques ?

i always start with getting the skin into glowing condition by giving a face oil massage before doing anything else.

Getting a good curl going on the lashes is very important to me, and I generally use a few false lashes to take a pretty lash to a gorgeous lash.

Can you recall any teenage make up disasters? ( I personally favoured a terracotta orange bronzer overload .. and an inability to blend down the neck hah!)

i have to say, i think i did a better job with my makeup when i was a teen! i was certainly more consistently put together – i wore perfectly executed black cat eyeliner every single day.

BARREtoned … My Introduction To The Pretzel & The Shake

20130412_IMG_0169_JPW

BARREtoned Pilates

what the hell is barre workouts?

why is everyone going mental in NYC for them ? why do I  feel so uncool for not knowing ?

So I rocked up at my first BARREtoned Class in Notting Hill , thinking I was about to embark on an adult version of ballet class.. to which I have to admit  as a child I wore tap shoes in my first ballet classes and then cried refusing to take them off .. I was shy shut up .. I just wanted to be heard . tap a tap a tap a  …and then spent any following class running up the wall and locking my knees over the Barre to dangle upside down … my prima ballerina potential was pretty much ZERO

SO THIS WAS GOING TO BE EASY … NOTTTT

its a mix between Aerobics, Abs Class , Pilates and BootCamp ..and an all over body assault

I spent a vast majority of the class feeling “The Shake” something the instructors pride themselves in .. basically exhausting your muscles in certain positions than you begin to involuntarily shake .. so the whole class looks like a bunch of people convulsing from a weird exercise exorcism

Then they twisted me into a position called the “Pretzel”  which is exactly what it sounds like .. and then after all of that you had to thrust your leg on the Barre and stretch some frankly terrified thigh muscles ..

shake

by the time the class was over I felt relieved .. and slightly proud I had survived ..I interviewed the instructors after..

NOTE: MY ARMS ARE SHAKING HOLDING THE CAMERA … I BLAME THE “PRETZEL” POSITION ..

22 years old she’s  travelled the world from Singapore to Milan modelling and lived a hectic schedule of shows and on-location shoots.

but all that wasn’t enough , she instead decided to add businesswoman to her achievements.. a healthy one at that  joining the YOR health group Yorhealth.com

a high quality vitamin/ supplement all round health brand , with 30 years backed research …

we asked her some questions about health and wellbeing

sum up your nutrition and health values in 5 words?

Clean, simple, natural, easy, holistic

whats your healthy little secret?

Digestive enzymes with every meal !
Skin brushing.

favourite recipe?
I love making smoothies – banana, coconut water. Natural peanut butter, almond milk, YOR super greens and maybe some chia seeds with nutmeg. Could have this every day.

how does what you put into your body effect your whole being?

You are what you eat and what you absorb. I think digestive health is hugely under appreciated. Your immune system is intertwined with your digestive system so poor digestion often is a trigger for disease. Take care if your tummy and you’ll thank yourself later.

If I opened your fridge now , what would you be most proud of and what would you be most embarrassed by?

Hmmm most proud of my coconut water probably… And my huge array of tropical fruits!
Most embarrassed by the asian sweets in there that I’ve collected and never eaten … Probably going off. Oh I sometimes have kimchi in the fridge, which is fermented Korean cabbage… That’s a bit embarrassing .

Screen Shot 2013-04-28 at 09.18.31

best advice you have ever been given?
Tough one. I have some quotes that I hold really close to me…
“If a small thing has the power to make you angry, what does that say about your size”
John Demartini also said
Life is worthwhile if you learn, if you try (and try again), if you stay, and if you care. Care for the day, the people, the enterprise and yourself – become all you can become
I keep that one in my phone

beauty go-tos (products, regimes everything )

Palmers cocoa butter or any anti-stretch mark and smoothing cream, dental floss – don’t neglect your gums!, pumice stone for your feet, skin brush for circulation… I drink ALOT of tea too – dandelion is great, burdock root tea helps circulation too (mine is terrible), and ginger and peppermint for post-meals

Doutzen Kroes  has the most banging body ever… and this is what she does .. cut to us all running screaming to wholefoods for macu oil and green powder argghh runnnn

whats your health tip?
I always take Vitamin C and then I have a routine of these three shakes every morning:

– When I wake up, I squeeze a lemon, grapefruit and an orange to make a juice for my husband, my son and I.

– Then I mix a green powder [Original Superfood Greens from Whole Foods], wheatgrass [The Power of Grass, Whole Foods], chia seeds and water shake. It’s disgusting but you just have to drink it all at once.

Screen Shot 2013-04-22 at 13.26.51

– For my third shake I blend banana, chia seed, cacao beans, Camu and Maca oils.

I am always so stuffed after drinking them all one after the other. Then I go to work and have a normal breakfast.Screen Shot 2013-04-22 at 13.21.58

Model Come Raw Foody Lets us Know Her Secrets ( Interview with Alex Glenday)

alexglenday

You know that ol’ saying Never trust a (skinny) i say fat chef … I always think that when people give me advice on nutrition or beauty tips .. and they look hmm how to put this politely a little less of what I would like to look like (its hard to sound succinct when you just want to say sh*t hey!)

However when i meet someone beautiful and radiant i literally want to climb inside them and find out everything they do , eat and rub on themselves.

This goes for Alex Glenday -Model, Raw Foodist , photographer , traveller .. somewhat entrepreneur .. this list could go on for a while . She’s walked for the likes of Paul Smith and Julien Macdonald and you’ve probably dribbled over her editorials in magazines …

But you cant disregard the facts , she’s beautiful and talented and full of energy .. because how the F8ck is she doing it all ? I found out what she does, her secrets (YHUSSS!!) and inspirations

What do you do? & what lead you to doing it?

I am busy with a couple of projects at the moment. I like to categorize those under two different fabulous f’s- the one is food the other fashion.  In fashion, I have reached my tenth year of modeling, a decade long journey that has taken me round the world, Asia, Europe, Africa and America and left with me with a little suitcase of essentials which I will get to later… more recently I have been dabbling deeper into photography.  After living in New York last year I returned to the summer in Cape Town South Africa, where I grew up, to start some new chapters in my life.  Here is my first published editorial: (http://www.afashionfriend.co.za/issue/aff-issue-35/nomadic-jewels)

I have been working with the brilliant photographer, Ulrich Knoblach on a book that he is making, as his illustrator, painting naked ladies frolicking around South African Landscapes in gentle watercolors.

salad_wrap_460_wide-1

Food has been the most capacitating thing as a model, who must be in good shape.  An unending development which has left me with some simple solutions to energy and indulgent satisfaction.  I have wanted to share my discoveries with all my loved ones and now anyone who will care to taste creations I have made.  I started a raw food and yoga detox retreat, the ‘RAWreTREAT’ (http://rawretreat.withtank.com/) on a fruit farm in South Africa with a childhood friend.  This is on hold as the winter months close in, and a new business venture in the form of ridiculously delicious fine dining pop up dinners has resulted:  ‘Forage To Feast’, focusing on organic, wild and local foods that are perfectly combined, into delectable dishes.   Dinner parties in awesome locations with good live music, have a look at the concept here: (http://www.foragetofeast.com/).  I am also in the process of launching a company with my organizationally savvy sister, to bring Kombucha to the main stream market in South Africa and potentially for export in the future (http://www.brewkombucha.co.za/.)

What’s your healthy little secret?

You should combine your food perfectly! Of course it helps to eat all the right things, but if you get them in the wrong combinations, you create a digestive backlog which leads to a build up of waste and how can you be purely beautiful if you aren’t clean? Also don’t be scared of the right fats, they are great for skin and hair and mobilize bad fats and make them move on out! That is the best secret in terms of losing weight. An Avocado a day is great! – Just make bloody sure you combine properly. Look at the helpful food combining chart which Beth posted before, to see what I mean.

Who’s your female inspiration and why?

American Nutritionist, Natalia Rose is definitely my health inspiration.  Her book the RAW FOOD DETOX DIET was introduced to me in 2010 by a fellow model in Paris.  She has really changed the way I live my life and has in turn changed the thoughts of so many people that I know.  She is logical and clear. A guru.

Honestly Healthy An Excerpt From Natasha Corrett Alkaline chef

Natasha corrett wrote Honestly Healthy -Eat With Your Body In Mind The Alkaline Way with her Expert nutritionist Godmother Vicki Edgson , it was a how-to guide to eliminating acid in the body and recipe book that encouraged balanced PH levels , thus promoting optimal health all whilst being delicious !

Screen Shot 2013-04-07 at 18.17.19

Above: Natasha & honestly Healthy Hardcover

Lemon (neutralising)

And Milk (acid forming)

visual demonstration of the WTF facts you will learn in said book

her company Honestly Healthy Food has an ingenious “fridge fill” delivery service already garnering media attention with its celeb following , the books success was going to be a no brainer .. and then Posh aka Victoria Beckham tweeted her support (GAME CHANGER!!) and everyone was going Bat SH*T mental for it ..

if you toss aside all fashionably glossy stuff.. its an approach to health (as opposed to DIET) that actually scientifically benefits the body . anyway i interviewed her and smuggled like a squirrel a few questions away for DFH (i just abbreviated my own blog.. thats how serious this is getting)

P.s dont flip out but .. shh just quietly her next book comes out soon

What is your healthy little secret?

Drinking greens and water all day keeps you really hydrated

Sum up your nutrition and health values in 5 words?

Eat as close to nature intended (6 words!)

Beauty go-tos (products, regimes everything)?

I’m a REN skincare snob i can’t use anything else! – a year ago i starting using them and will never look back – its completley balanced my skin, especially for me being in the kitchen all the time i need to look after it.

My two favorite products are the Glycolactic face mask which gets you looking radiant in literally 10 minutes i use it every sunday night with the detox mask – it makes me new again 🙂 and the Bio Retinoid Anti-Ageing Cream is like velvet perfect for the harsh uk weather.

Coconut water to keep hydrated!  Beauty comes from the inside out! I like Jaxcoco

If I opened your fridge now, what would you be most proud of and what would you be most embarrassed by?

I would be most embarrassed by some moldy vegetables at the bottom and old bircher muesli – i can’t bring myself to throw food away so even i don’t eat it it sits in there – maybe im just lazy!Probably most proud of is my new invention of raw coconut fudge for the next book!

Best advice you have ever been given?

If you are passionate about what you do then the rest will follow – my mother has always instilled this into me from a young age.

ALSO THEY HAVE A GREAT HEALTH BLOG HERRREE

Excerpt From An Interview With S.W Basics Founder ADINA!!

ImageBROOKLYN based beauty maverick Adina Grigore … had sensitive skin .. so thought F*@*ck this chemical riddled skincare products with more unpronounceable words than your first russian language class ( trust me i’ve done them) and set out to make her own . She did , and she did it brilliantly , In Vogue – literally , her once small business is growing . And with a little karma on her side because the products are locally sourced 100% organic and natural and a maximum of FIVE ingredients on the labels .

She very kindly let me press her on some random questions , heres a tiny excerpt

If you could choose one ingredient you had in unlimited supplies (e.g a fountain of olive oil! a restocking fridge full of coconuts!) what would it be and why ?

For skincare it would actually be clay. You can use it everywhere! But for a crossover it would have to be sea salt, we fly through sea salt in our house! Great for all cooking and baths and break outs! And even toothpaste.

see she’s not just beauty she’s brains and full of handy tips
