“EXERCISE. Each morning, after I brush my teeth, wash my face and shake off the first deep layer of sleep, I lie down on the floor beside my bed and begin my first exercise. It is a simple bust-firming routine which consists of lifting five-pound weights from a spread-eagle arm position to a point directly above my head. I do this 15 times, slowly. I repeat the exercise another 15 times from a position with my arms above my head. Then, with my arms at a 45-degree angle from the floor, I move my weights in circles until I’m tired. I don’t count rhythmically like the exercise people on the radio; I couldn’t stand exercise if I had to feel regimented about it.”

Yogi Rachel Brathen Talks Body Image, Seinfeld , Pigeon Pose And A Pup Called Ringo

In an era of excessive stimulation and constant viral over exposure (may the twerk RIP ) its nice to come across someone using Social Media for good …
Thats where Rachel Brathen comes in, a travelling yogi with more than  59,000 followers on Facebook and a casual 409k on Instagram … yep she’s basically the Beyonce of yoga .
Her profiles are peppered with beautiful images of her Aruba abode  (yep she lives on a caribbean island FML ) her always-booked-out retreats , a slightly mental whippet named Ringo (he has an Instagram @ringo_thegringo ) as well as jaw dropping pictures of intricate poses mid-ocean .. on a PADDLE BOARD! – This my friends is called SUP yoga (Stand-Up Paddle board Yoga) and Rachel was one of the first people to pioneer the beautiful practice.
It may sound as though she’s living the good life , but Rachel takes her social media power seriously  and with great responsibility .. especially with helping her younger female fans accept their bodies .

DFH:  how did you start out as a yoga instructor? 

RB: I was practicing a lot and found myself one day thinking “if i was teaching this class, i’d do this or that different…” and shortly after that i started teaching to friends and the company i worked for while living in costa rica. i was teaching for a year before i did my first teacher training. when i moved to aruba i started teaching full time – there was no real yoga community on the island and i had a big space to fill! now the yoga community is thriving; it’s beautiful.

DFH:The single healthy tip EVERYONE should incorporate into their hectic lives? 

RB:Breathe deeply, drink more water and don’t make life as seriously as your mind wants it to be.

DFH:What makes you laugh ? 

RB:My puppies! All the time. Also, Seinfeld. Favorite show. Ever.

DFH:you have an amazing following, especially on social media sites like Instagram , whats your favourite image you have posted and why  ?

RB:I posted a “love your body love your soul” post a few months ago, describing some of my flaws (stretch makes, i like eating cheese in bed, i have oily skin) and  a couple weeks back a picture of my belly fat. Haha – yes – these is my favorite posts! i get such amazing response every time. I’m sick of seeing only picture perfect posts on instagram, like everyone’s lives are so damn perfect all the time. we choose what we portray. everyone has bad days, everyone feels inadequate from time to time.. and it can be quite intimidating seeing post after post of advanced yoga poses, fitness shots, beach… no one’s life looks like that all the time. i do my best to inspire people and still keep it real. the comments i get on these posts make me tear up, and i get flooded with emails. so much love from people who are just want to accept their bodies as they are.

DFH:how do you stay healthy whilst travelling ? 

i don’t always. i try to practice as much as i can – i always have my mat with me. i focus on drinking water. i do gentle stretches every morning and legs up the wall every evening to keep my body happy. i drink beer when i feel like it and never ever ever indulge in “guilty pleasures” – NO GUILT. EVER. Pleasure? Hell yes!

DFH: how would you advise people especially young girls to accept their bodies? 

RB:We have to change the way we see ourselves, not the way we eat. Instead of trying to change your body (lose weight, get fitter, slimmer whatever), focus on loving your body first – real change and healthy ways come from there. Stop feeling guilty about what you eat or how you act! I read a fitness magazine the other day and they had a segment called “you ate it? negate it?” – BULLSHIT! It’s stuff like that that promotes insane body images. like, “uh-oh, i accidentally indulged and enjoyed dessert after dinner, or birthday cake, or wine with my friends… How do i get rid of the guilt i feel – how much exercise do i need to do?”. It’s nuts. There are so many more important things in life than obsessing over calories or number on a scale. What do you love to do? What makes you feel good? What makes you really happy? Focus on this! Be happy, first. Don’t take your body so seriously. Life is much more fun when we relax and love ourselves the way we are.

DFH:Favourite Pose? 

RB:Double pigeon pose. Or legs up the wall pose. And handstands!

DFH:advice for people wanting to become yoga instructors? 

RB:Find your own voice. Don’t try to copy your past teachers, or an image of what you want to be as a teacher. Find what makes you unique and use that as a teacher.

Squeaky Clean Juice Feasting …Courtesy Of Fruveju Organic Cold Pressed Juice

I came to this one with trepidation, i’d heard of this combination because of The Master Cleanse and wasn’t keen on an al caliente kinda beverage . but the coconut nectar (so glad to not see AGAVE for once!) and the fresh lemon was so precisely blended the kick only came at the end but nothing lasting .. so basically you get the benefits of the epic cleansing minus the face grimace . arrribbaaa

aghh the all round good guy , the one you expect .. the green guy . it wasn’t too sweet but not too bland .. just what you would expect , I had 4 bottles a day .. its so nutrient packed that you don’t really crave anything , nor do you get those pangs of hunger or the tired lows .. he’s a sneaky little guru . he makes the cleanse sustainable .. truly

This wasn’t actually on my cleanse but I was given a bottle to try .. and thank f*ck .. Its so simple- just watermelon and lime , its now on my list of top juices EVER ! I found myself sipping it in bed and smiling , its like eating sweets but without the guilt . I cant even describe the deliciousness .. on the website they go on and on about the benefits ” Watermelon contains the amino acids citrulline and arginine, which help promote healthy arteries, blood flow and cardiovascular function” but its so unessesary because its like a guilt free cocktail,you’d drink it even if it wasn’t so good for you.

Again this one wasn’t on my juice cleanse but I was given a bottle any whoo .. called the Red Pineapple it features pineapple, red apple, carrots, beets, ginger.  I was so thankful that the ginger didnt have that overtaking zest most gingery juices has.. people go mental on the ginger in a juice .. its like why!! its so strong .. my throats on fire . anyway its an all round good guy .. I was actually getting the ol’ tickle throat when I started the cleanse so nailed this bad boy and the tickly throat turned into .. nothing! I think from all the bromelain (anti inflammatory in pineapple) Vit C (beets) antibiotic properties (ginger) its def a juice to put down in the Food As Medicine Book. 

The Creamy Dreamy One

Oh.Mah.Gawd this is a game changer , Fruveju had perfected the cleanse and a lot has to do with this little bad boy, it tastes like a creamy tangy almost yogurty milkshake .. its just sweet and thick enough .. I’m literally “mmmmmhhmmm”ing recalling it .. I don’t even know why someone isn’t selling cartons of cashew milk .. almond milk can go bl*ow itself .. Recently in my pursuit of knowledge and learning of “alternative medicines” or eastern medicine I began looking into Chinese Medicine having recently engulfed myself in Ayurvedic Medicine i felt it time to show my asian friends some love.

I’ve been getting regular acupuncture which is all great and good and you can research the millions of health journals which proves its effectiveness blah blah blah

but this isnt about that …

What intrigued me most in seeing chinese medicine practionors was their inate ability to tell me what physical or emotional problems I had within moments of meeting me ..

I then asked one practitioner if i could borrow some of her Chinese Medicine Textbooks (because im anal like that)  .. i needed to know the secret mind reading ninja tricks.. what it lead me to was FACE MAPPING .. i’ve posted an image of this months ago , but i never really realised what it all meant .

basically Chinese Tradition states that what happens in the body shows up on the face !

and pinpointing areas or pigmentation,acne and congestion on the face alludes to internal problems which has been backed up by Western Medicine .

for example PMS acne tends to show up on the chin – Chinese medicine also have this as a genealogical point / spleen point which controls the hormones

I personally noticed my smile lines diminishing recently (im 22 but they were definitely there) i thought it was just because i had gotten some sun but apparently this is the LUNG section .. which makes sense as i quit smoking and also I’ve noticed almost all smokers have that hideous puppet mouth the longer they smoke!

3. Skip breakfast

eating breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper is a health myth… and its high time everyone stopped forcing breakfast into their mouths to “kick start their metabolism”
Our bodies didn’t evolve like that. Breakfast should be eaten when we first feel hungry in the day, not because cereal companies are telling you to chow down corn flakes at 7am.
You will have more energy if you actually delay your morning meal until you are feeling hungry – when the best thing to eat is fruit, a green smoothie or a fresh vegetable juice!

4-5 large handfuls of leafy greens – Kim recommends romaine lettuce, kale and spinach
Parsley or Coriander (if taste doesn’t bother you – very detoxifying)
1 liter of water (filtered is best!)

1 Apple (cored)
1 Pear
1 Banana
Juice ½ Lemon
1 cup Ice

Instructions
Place ingredients in a big blender (the more powerful, the better and more appetizing your smoothies) – water and greens first, blitz, then add fruit and ice.
Blend until smooth.

How did you get involved in Make Up?  

i was a social worker for the first 10 years of my career life and i worked in the realm of HIV/AIDS. I had a lot of clients who were transgendered, mostly male to female. The way they were able to transform themselves through the use of makeup was so amazing to me! it led me to start researching how i could be involved in that world – the world of makeup! i read up on every artist and photographer whose work i admired from all the major magazines, and found photographers to do test shoots with to begin building my book. It was a slow but sure process, and i made sure to remain open to learning everything and anything.

You favour natural products .. why and what are your favourites ? 

As a person who’s concerned with what i put into my body with regard to food and drink, i find it just as important to be conscious with what i put on my body- and the bodies of my clients. Yes it is! The main issues that folks come to me with that make them feel less than great are skin breakouts, and skin dryness/lack of glow associated with aging.

Eating/drinking lots of fresh leafy greens, richly colored berries, and keeping greasy/heavy foods out of your diet is a great place to start. I’m also a proponent of including apple cider vinegar into your diet (1-2 tsp a day in water) plus 1-2 tsp of coconut oil mixed into your food – whether that’s in a smoothie, or your oatmeal, or cooking with it – will keep your liver clean, and your skin glowing, as well as help stave off any sickness. (i haven’t had a cold or the flu in YEARS!). I also believe in keeping a strong yoga practice to work out tension and find focus – it will show on your face, without a doubt.

I find that a hair/skin/nails supplement is generally beneficial to most, and choosing one made from whole foods is a good idea. The vitamin B and D groups are wonderful for keeping our emotional selves and cells in good health.

following on from that .. if I were to open your fridge .. what would you be most proud of or most embarrassed by ? 

well, my boyfriend is a chef in a raw, vegan restaurant, so he’s in charge of the fridge – and there are countless containers of his great concoctions in there. I’d be most proud that at least 85 percent of food i keep in the house is organic and or locally grown/produced. We try to be mindful not to be wasteful and we only shop for what we know we’ll be eating within the few days that follow, so there’s never that much in there. Most embarrassed – I have an obsession with frozen sweet peas (organic, of course). i love them, so i keep tons of them on hand. when people open the freezer they’re always confused and surprised to find 15-20 bags of frozen peas on hand!

When it comes to getting ready for the red carpet what are your go-to fail safe products or techniques ?

i always start with getting the skin into glowing condition by giving a face oil massage before doing anything else.

Getting a good curl going on the lashes is very important to me, and I generally use a few false lashes to take a pretty lash to a gorgeous lash.

Can you recall any teenage make up disasters? ( I personally favoured a terracotta orange bronzer overload .. and an inability to blend down the neck hah!) 

i have to say, i think i did a better job with my makeup when i was a teen! i was certainly more consistently put together – i wore perfectly executed black cat eyeliner every single day.

You are what you eat and what you absorb. I think digestive health is hugely under appreciated. Your immune system is intertwined with your digestive system so poor digestion often is a trigger for disease. Take care if your tummy and you’ll thank yourself later.

If I opened your fridge now , what would you be most proud of and what would you be most embarrassed by?

Hmmm most proud of my coconut water probably… And my huge array of tropical fruits!
Most embarrassed by the asian sweets in there that I’ve collected and never eaten … Probably going off. Oh I sometimes have kimchi in the fridge, which is fermented Korean cabbage… That’s a bit embarrassing .

Palmers cocoa butter or any anti-stretch mark and smoothing cream, dental floss – don’t neglect your gums!, pumice stone for your feet, skin brush for circulation… I drink ALOT of tea too – dandelion is great, burdock root tea helps circulation too (mine is terrible), and ginger and peppermint for post-meals

Recently I swapped my beautiful baby -Chanel Foundation to a NATURAL CHEMICAL FREE FOUNDATION .. dun dun dun .. cue me running around the wild with dangly armpit hair and burning sage . but nooo not like that .. Firstly I made the easiest rice milk ever.. I. am . so .domestic .

NO its great . no added oil like store milk alternatives . or salt or stabilisers blah blah blah .. plus when I strained it I slightly felt like I was milking a cows udder … and I immediately had a strange envy of the Amish . so soothing ..

It was delicious . butIi didnt use maple syrup .. I no likey maple syrup . so I did it with YACON SYRUP

I always take Vitamin C and then I have a routine of these three shakes every morning:

– When I wake up, I squeeze a lemon, grapefruit and an orange to make a juice for my husband, my son and I.

– Then I mix a green powder [Original Superfood Greens from Whole Foods], wheatgrass [The Power of Grass, Whole Foods], chia seeds and water shake. It’s disgusting but you just have to drink it all at once.
